That We Would Be One
My Christian friend, did you know that while Jesus was here walking this earth, He prayed for you? According to John 17:20, He prayed for all who will believe in Him through the word of the disciples. And what did He pray for? That we would be one.
“I pray that they will all be one, just as You and I are one – as You are in Me, Father, and I am in You. And may they be in us so that the world will believe You sent me. I have given them the glory you gave me, so they may be one as We are one. I am in them and You are in Me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that You sent me and that You love them as much as You love me.” (John 17:21-23 NLT)
Did you catch what did He say would be the result of our unity? That the world would know that God sent Him, and that God loves them just as God loves Jesus. And as followers of Christ, shouldn’t it be our heart’s desire for the world to believe this?
In Ephesians 4, Paul implores us to walk worthy of the calling. And how? “with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” (Eph 4:2-3). He goes on in versus 4-5 to say there is ONE body, ONE Spirit, ONE Lord, ONE faith, ONE baptism, ONE God and Father of all.
As believers, we have the same Spirit living within us. Yet, on social media, there are believers fighting and tearing down of one another over politics, news articles, and opinions on anything and everything. Christian marriages are breaking apart as offense and unforgiveness are running rampant. Jealousy and selfish ambition are causing division in our churches as people gossip and slander one another, or worse yet, try to turn people against leadership within the church to fulfil their own selfish desires.
These are things expected to see in the world, not within the body of Christ.
Church, if there is any divisive spirit within you, get rid of it!
Do not slander anyone and avoid quarreling (Titus 3:1)
Do not waste your time getting into foolish discussions (Titus 3:9)
Have nothing to do with those who cause division (Titus 3:10)
Humble yourself before God. Resist the devil (James 4:11)
Purify your hearts, get rid of your divided heart (James 4:8)
Be gentle and ready to forgive (Colossians 3:13)
Put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you (Colossians 3:5)
Stop living according your flesh, but instead set your mind on the things the Spirit desires (Romans 8:5)
Now is the time for us to come together, as one body, to join in Jesus’ prayer, for unity among believers so that the world can see that God loves them and that He sent Jesus to save them.
