My Car is Old
My car is old. It is on the edge of 190, 000 miles, only 2 of the speakers are working, a bungie cord is holding up my front visor, it is making noises that a car just should not make. It is no surprise; we have known my car is going downhill. We have been praying it will continue running until we can save up enough money to get a new one. As of today, it continues to chug right along.
It is so easy to look at newer cars with all the bells and whistles, and dream of that for ourselves. We deserve it! We have been contemplating if we cannot save up money in time, maybe just maybe we could get a car loan. After all, so many people get car loans (and do simply fine) and we have shown ourselves trustworthy to pay things off, right? In all honesty, we have gone as far as to look up what the monthly payment would be for a 20, 000 car loan or how easy it would be to take out some money on our house mortgage (since we have worked so hard to build equity, why not?). What a temptation!!
No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to [d]bear it. 1 Corinthians 10:13 NKJV
It is a REAL struggle, a temptation that comes so easy. To you reading this, it may not be a new car that is the temptation but I would guarantee there is something in your life right now tempting you, trying to pull you back into the bondage God delivered you from. Whatever sin it is, it is bondage! We must treat it as such. You cannot just aimlessly deal with temptations. You must fight, fight, fight like in a battle. Proverbs 22:7 The borrower is SLAVE to the lender. NKJV
No matter how wonderful a new car might be, I am NOT willing to take that chance. I remind myself of all that God has saved us from. I remind myself that these things are just temporary tangible things of life. I felt a little sick to my stomach just even thinking about having a loan again. What am I willing to sacrifice for temporary fleshly desires?
I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. Galatians 5:16-17 NKJV
There will be a day which I will drive around in a “new to me” car. God will provide it when it is the right time for us, He always does! In the meantime, we have chosen to focus on eternal things.
If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. Colossians 3:1-3
