FROM “THE GREAT DIVORCE” by C.S. Lewis, “Pity was meant to be a spur that drives joy to help misery. But it can be used the wrong way round. It can be used for a kind of blackmailing. Those who chose misery can hold joy up to ransom, by pity.”
In short, you are blackmailing people by using your woes to elicit pity from others. Are you the “woe is me” person, telling others about your consistently pitiful life, starring in your own movie always playing the victim role? I’m using very harsh language because you need to hear what you are doing. It’s manipulation and it’s sinful.
Manipulation is witchcraft. It is of the same spirit as the evil wife of Ahab. Perhaps you’ve heard of her? Her name is Jezebel. You should have nothing to do with this evil and demonic spirit! It is time to break out of those chains. Compassion is a good and godly thing, but you have learned to prey on people’s hearts by manipulation. It boils down to this: you have not yet learned to run to Jesus. Your mind has not been renewed to the ways of God and His Word.
You must stop relying on others for your confidence. We all must find our identity in Christ alone. None other can fill the role of Jesus. No other can love you or accept you as the Lord. It’s time to break free of your self-inflicted victim prison! The zoe life you are desiring is only found in a life surrendered to and reliant upon Jesus.
“I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” Galatians 2:20
Stop using your emotions to manipulate. Repent and be born again and then you are more than a conqueror. Renew your mind to the Word of God and put on the armor of God. You are well able to overcome any and all adversity through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
For those who have a compassionate heart, stop playing amateur providence. You are not always helping- get wisdom and discernment. You are not another’s savior. You have no idea what God is trying to fulfill in that person. He may be trying to chasten them and you are hindering His process of discipline. Pray for them. Give them a coat if you have two, but lead them to the cross.
