Travel Plans

Plans Hindered

Would it bother you if I were up here without a plan?

If I decided, I’m just going to wing it today?

I know it would bother me…

I’d be very concerned, because I like to have time to prepare

I like to have a written-out plan on what I’m going to preach.

Tonight were in Romans 15:22-33

And we will be talking about Paul’s Plan to visit Rome.

But, First Let’s pray

Romans 15:22-33

Plan to Visit Rome

22 For this reason I also have been much hindered from coming to you. 23 But now no longer having a place in these parts, and having a great desire these many years to come to you, 24 whenever I journey to Spain, [a]I shall come to you. For I hope to see you on my journey, and to be helped on my way there by you, if first I may enjoy your company for a while. 25 But now I am going to Jerusalem to [b]minister to the saints. 26 For it pleased those from Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor among the saints who are in Jerusalem. 27 It pleased them indeed, and they are their debtors. For if the Gentiles have been partakers of their spiritual things, their duty is also to minister to them in material things. 28 Therefore, when I have performed this and have sealed to them this fruit, I shall go by way of you to Spain. 29 But I know that when I come to you, I shall come in the fullness of the blessing [c]of the gospel of Christ.

30 Now I beg you, brethren, through the Lord Jesus Christ, and through the love of the Spirit, that you strive together with me in prayers to God for me, 31 that I may be delivered from those in Judea who [d]do not believe, and that my service for Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints, 32 that I may come to you with joy by the will of God, and may be refreshed together with you. 33 Now the God of peace be with you all. Amen.

In this portion of scripture Paul is again reminding them

That he greatly desires to see them

He tells them of His future plans in following God’s will for his life

And that He hopes this will include a visit to them on his way.

Paul had often planned to visit them,

but up to this point that plan has been hindered.

And in this circumstance, it wasn’t the enemy that hindered him visiting

In the scriptures leading up to this Paul had explained

That the reason he has been hindered from visiting

Is because he has been doing extensive work, by the power of the Spirit of God

To fully preach the gospel from Jerusalem to Illyricum

He had made it his aim to preach the gospel where Christ was not named

It was doing the work that God called Him to do that hindered him from visiting

It might seem like these verses are simply to reassure the church that He still plans to come and to let them know the reason why he hasn’t been there yet.

So why are Paul’s travel plans recorded in the Word?

Because it’s important

The Word is alive and active

We can learn a great deal from these verse

We can tell from the scriptures that Paul was a planner

His plans up to this point to visit them have been hindered,

but he has already come up with a new plan to visit

He tells them first he’s going to continue his work

delivering a contribution that the believers in Macedonia and Achaia have generously given to help the saint’s in Jerusalem

and then, hopes to stop and visit on his way to Spain.

People are planners

Even if were not great at it we all make plans

Plans for work, vacation, retirement, our future, what we will eat for dinner

Some of you that haven’t eaten yet,

might be thinking of your dinner plans right now

And it makes sense, as we are created in the image of God

And our God makes plans

Ephesians 1:3-6

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, 5 having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He [a]made us accepted in the Beloved.

Before the foundations of the world, He chose us

He had a plan that we may be adopted sons and daughters

that we could be holy and blameless in his sight

Through Jesus Christ for HIS glory

Jeremiah 1:5

5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you;

Before you were born I sanctified[a] you;

I [b]ordained you a prophet to the nations.”

God had plans for Jeremiah to be a prophet,

before He even formed him in his mother’s womb

And like Jeremiah, God has plans for YOU

Ephesians 2:10

10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

It’s Good to have plans

Paul’s plans and desire to visit them were not wrong,

in fact they were completely biblical with pure motives

He longed to Impart to them some spiritual gift, that they may in mutual faith be encouraged together, that he may have some fruit among them, to preach the gospel to them, to be helped by them on his journey and to enjoy their company.

Honestly, we should all have plans like this

Plans to encourage one another and to share the gospel

To enjoy the company of other believers

And even though Paul’s plans were good

He wanted to make sure they were within God’s will and plan for Him

Even though he deeply desired to visit them

He put God’s will and plan for His life first.

At the beginning of his letter

In Romans 1:10

He said, ”10 making request if, by some means, now at last I may find a way in the will of God to come to you.”

And In Romans 15:32

Paul Said,” 32 that I may come to you with joy by the will of God, and may be refreshed together with you.”

We should desire for our plans to align with God’s plans

Putting His will above our own

Desiring to do the work he has called us to do before our own plans.

Did you notice that even in his new plans to visit

Paul said FIRST I’m going to deliver this contribution

Then visit you on the way to the next destination -IF its in God’s will…

It would be similar to us saying, First I’m going to serve in the ministry I’m scheduled to do – that God called me to do – that I signed up for

THEN I’ll go on that trip that I planned… IF its in God’s will…

Proverbs 16:3

Amplified Bible, Classic Edition

3 Roll your works upon the Lord [commit and trust them wholly to Him; He will cause your thoughts to become agreeable to His will, and] so shall your plans be established and succeed.

Paul was okay with God redirecting his plans along the way.

We see this in

Acts 16:6-10

6 Now when they had gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in [a]Asia. 7 After they had come to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the [b]Spirit did not permit them. 8 So passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas. 9 And a vision appeared to Paul in the night. A man of Macedonia stood and pleaded with him, saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” 10 Now after he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to preach the gospel to them.

After God redirected them, they arrived in Macedonia

Ministered to a women named Lydia, she and her family were baptized

They were arrested – leading to the keeper of the prison receiving Christ and him and his family being baptized

Paul’s Plans being hindered brought God Glory

God’s plans are so much better than ours

Story – Plan Wrecked

A few days ago Jeremy had asked me how my sermon was going

“I’m going to do something crazy” – Explain Illustration Just like in Youth

You all know how brutally honest my husband is…

He said, That’s a terrible Idea! Don’t do that!

It would completely disrupt the service and take too much time.

Immediately I thought, why you got to wreck my plan?

I like to use illustrations like that, that’s what I do

Why did I even mention it? Why did I ask Him about it…?

And quickly realized I told him because I trust Him

I knew he would tell me the truth…

I know He will point me in the right direction!

And he was right, It would have been very disruptive

How much more so with GOD!

We serve a good God!

We can fully trust Him, He always speaks truth, He will always guide us in the right direction!

And HE knows EVERYTHING! He knows what is best!

We should completely welcome God wrecking our plans

Knowing that what he has in store for us is far better than any of our own plans.

Even if His plans take us out of our comfort zone, or even if they seem scary.

We know we can trust God, We know he is Good.

Psalm 34:8

8 Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good;

Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!

We need to trust God even when His plan is scary or hard

I’m not sure if you realized… but it’s absolutely terrifying for me to stand up here and preach

Story: Every time a youth take over came up

Jeremy would say Brittney is preaching…

Always said no…

Then again  – In Tuesday meeting

immediately I felt God say quit rebelling –

felt immediate conviction

So with out hesitation that time – I said yup.

I decided to immediately obey,

And not allow myself to justify a reason to say no.

My plans completely changed …

My plans were to remain in my comfort zone

Jeremy is always pushing me out of my comfort zone so I can grow

The same is with the Lord

He will change your plans

call you out of your comfort zone

Causing you to grow in your faith

I can relate to Jeremiah when he responds to God’s plan for him

Saying, ““Ah, Lord God!
Behold, I cannot speak, for I am a youth.”

And here I’m not even a youth, and He’s not calling me to speak to the Nations

and yet for some reason its still scary

I’ve had to remind myself continually of Pastor Matt’s Sermon a while ago

Just Do it Afraid

Let’s go back and read the conversation God had with Jeremiah

Jeremiah 1:4-10

4 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying:

5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you;

Before you were born I sanctified[a] you;

I [b]ordained you a prophet to the nations.”

6 Then said I:

“Ah, Lord God!

Behold, I cannot speak, for I am a youth.”

7 But the Lord said to me:

“Do not say, ‘I am a youth,’

For you shall go to all to whom I send you,

And whatever I command you, you shall speak.

8 Do not be afraid of their faces,

For I am with you to deliver you,” says the Lord.

9 Then the Lord put forth His hand and touched my mouth, and the Lord said to me:

“Behold, I have put My words in your mouth.

10 See, I have this day set you over the nations and over the kingdoms,

To root out and to pull down,

To destroy and to throw down,

To build and to plant.”

Even if it’s scary it’s, if it’s God’s Plan its Good!

He will equip you to do what he is asking of you

And God will be with you each step of the way!

Because God is good, we know everything He dose and asks us to do is good

He knows what’s best and He knows things we don’t

Isaiah 55:8-9

8 “For My thoughts are not your thoughts,

Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord.

9 “For as the heavens are higher than the earth,

So are My ways higher than your ways,

And My thoughts than your thoughts.

We are not “all-knowing” but God is

When he changes our plans it’s because He knows what is best

And we should rejoice in that

We should rejoice knowing following His plan will bring Him Glory

As Christians, having received the gift of salvation

We should strive to bring Him Glory

Knowing that he is worthy of all glory honor and praise

We proclaim, “My life is not my own”

So how could we not rejoice in laying our plans down for His?

If your plans have been hindered don’t be discouraged …

Instead rejoice

Even if it’s the enemy that is hindering your plans, God knows

Pray over it, ask other believers to be praying with you.

As Paul did in Romans 15:30-31

30 Now I beg you, brethren, through the Lord Jesus Christ, and through the love of the Spirit, that you strive together with me in prayers to God for me, 31 that I may be delivered from those in Judea who [d]do not believe, and that my service for Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints,

If you want some encouragement through it

Read the book of Acts and see that even through attacks of the enemy

Being in prison, through trials and persecution

God accomplished great things through them

Trust in the Lord and allow Him to direct your steps

He will never lead you astray

Psalm 143:8

New King James Version

Cause me to hear Your lovingkindness in the morning,
For in You do I trust;
Cause me to know the way in which I should walk,
For I lift up my soul to You.

God has an individual plan and purpose for each of us.

You might not know exactly what it is at this moment,

but as we follow, listen, trust and obey God –

IN HIS perfect timing He will make the things He is calling us to do clear

However, while we wait

we have plenty of things God has already called us to do

and has made known to us through His Word.

Here are some plans to start with

Love the Lord with all your heart mind and soul!

*See Deuteronomy 6:1-9 and Mark 12:28-29*

Be repentant,

Read your word and pray

strive to be more and more like Christ,

praise and worship Him,

produce fruit

Share your testimony

tell others about Christ

Be forgiving

Make church a priority

And serve in the church with the giftings and abilities God gave you

Show up when your scheduled

Fellowship with other believers

be generous Helping one another

Take up your cross daily and count it as joy when we face trials and persecution,

gladly live a life completely surrendered to Him

and in that you will align your plans with His

and that will bring Him glory.
