And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “It is because we have no bread.”
Mark 8:16
How many times do we miss what the Lord is trying to speak to us because we’re focused on worldly things? How often does He try to warn us, teach us, and encourage us, yet we misunderstand His words because our focus is on the here and now?
Jesus was astonished that His disciples lacked understanding when He told them “Beware the leaven” of the Pharisees and of Herod (Mark 8:15). How is it they immediately thought of their lack of food? Did He not recently feed five thousand people with a few loaves, with many leftovers? Did He not recently feed four thousand the same way, with 7 baskets of fragments leftover, baskets large enough to fit a man inside it? (Mark 8:8, Acts 9:25). He had clearly shown that He was capable and willing to provide for all of their material needs, so why do they now focus on those things?
Now I ask, are we any different? Many times the Lord spoke something to me that I immediately attributed to some worldly desire or goal, thinking “This is what He’s speaking of”, only to find later that my understanding was wrong. It’s easy to focus on our physical needs and desires, especially in dire times such as these, but the Lord is still saying to His people “Do not worry”. He is your provider, He knows the things that you need before you even ask or voice it. If you do not seek first God and His righteousness, if you are not seeking the spiritual above the material, you are missing what God is trying to speak to you.
But seek the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added to you.
