THERE IS ONE LITTLE VERSE TUCKED AWAY in Ephesians that I think a lot of people skip over, “Leave no [such] room or foothold for the devil [give no opportunity to him].” Ephesians 4:27 I am quoting the Amplified version, but it’s very plain and clear, “Neither GIVE PLACE to the devil.”
I’m convinced that so much of the “trials” we go through and “suffering” we endure is because we bring it on ourselves. In this whole discourse of Ephesians, Paul tells us, “don’t lie, control your anger, don’t steal, watch your mouth/language, foolish talk, foul words, shun all bitterness, wrath and anger, avoid all sexual immorality and covetousness, greed and jealousy” because of these things, you open a door for the enemy (give him a place) and potentially the wrath of God.
I hear this all the time, “I’m under an attack from the enemy!” No, you are just reaping what you have sown. Yes, it rains on the just and the unjust, and seasons of affliction come to us all; but rarely have I ever seen a Job. You ALLOWED the enemy into your life because you could not control your flesh, you disobeyed God’s commands and now there are consequences.
Most people live like they don’t believe that God’s Word is true- at least not in our life. Oh sure, they like all the “God is our Healer and God is our Provider” verses, but the rest fall on deaf ears. Most of NT Scripture is hammered out on good doctrine and holy conduct, it’s corrective and instructive in its nature. Many fail to take God at His Word.
When you pick and choose which Scriptures you want to obey and fall under the “I’m under grace, I can live as I want” false doctrine; you are calling God a liar. However, I’m convinced that most Christians are Scripturally ignorant. And because you are ignorant of God’s Word, you are ignorant of God’s nature and character. “Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him.” I John 2:3-5 Please read that again.
If we do not obey His commands and we claim to know Him, we are liars. These are some harsh, but necessary words. This from the apostle John who called himself, “the one whom Jesus loved.” He knew all about love. But love is not love. Love is what God says it is. Obedience is the proof of our love.
When we don’t heed verses like, “bad company corrupts good morals” or “have no fellowship with darkness” or “beat your flesh into submission” or “be led by the Spirit and you will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh” or “if you do not forgive, you will not be forgiven”; and when we lie or believe a lie, allow jealousy and envy to drive us, slander others, forsake the gathering of the brethren; then we disobey God and give place to the devil.
Maybe we don’t actually think that God will do what He said He would do? Listen, God absolutely loves you and there is a sea of grace if you mess up, but you have to humble yourself and repent. Only humility and repentance will bring the grace and strength you need to overcome. Repent to God and others that you have wronged. Stop boasting in your false righteousness. Be honest with yourself and honest with God.
Pride will block God from working on your behalf. Sometimes, you have to endure suffering from your own hands. Take your medicine like a man! God will not be mocked. We will reap what we sow. As surely as you plant an apple seed you get an apple tree. Neither give place to the devil. Even if you have messed up, and the enemy is wreaking havoc in your life; call out to the Lord. He is your only help. God still has you in His hands and He can still work it out for your good. #runyourrace
