A RIVER HAS A SOURCE, A COURSE, and a mouth. This is the exact geographical definition of a river. Boy, Jesus sure knew what He was talking about. Of course, all things were created by Him and for Him. He created rivers and so when He says,

“He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his belly (heart) will flow rivers of living water.” John‬ ‭7:38‬ ‭

He understood the concept of a river. A river has a source- God Almighty; a course- through you; a mouth- a recipient of the source. Now, if there is a blockage from the source, the river dries up. Stop your communion with the Lord and you will dry up and die.

Even one day without prayer and studying the Word can produce a drying affect; but go multiple days and you will begin to see the negative affects on your body. There is not much living in the desert without a water source. You cannot survive without water for more than 3-4 days; you die spiritually. The Lord taught us to pray daily, “Give us this day our daily bread”. There’s a daily going to Him for our basic needs. Block the source and you cannot survive.

If there is a blockage from the course (through you) to the mouth (a recipient), you will flood. This too, brings destruction. Too much water destroys everything in its path. You will become bloated and die spiritually. I heard it said, “God will never get to you what He cannot get through you.” And I believe it. The blessings of God aren’t for you alone.

He is not in the business of making you fat, bloated and greedy. In this part of the river, there are two very important obstacles that need to be navigated: the mind and the heart. This course of the river is the choke point. If you cannot get things past your mind and your heart, the flow of God will never get to its destination. The mind must be renewed to the Word of God and the heart must be guarded sharply, for out of it flow the issues of life.

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Romans‬ ‭12:1-2‬ ‭

“Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.” Proverbs‬ ‭4:23‬

If you are not mindful and vigilant of your mind and your heart, the river floods and you become fleshly, selfish, pride-driven, full of envy, jealousy, and every other wicked and self-centered pursuit.

Lastly, a river has a mouth. It has a place it is ending up, feeding into. If a river dries up, everything green along its path will eventually die. Jesus said, “freely you have received, freely give.” You are blessed in order to be a blessing.

The gifts:talents you have are for your service to Him. You are a steward. A pastor friend said this, “Grace runs horizontal.” Have you received grace? You must give it away. Have you received forgiveness? You must give it away. Are you blessed financially, with wisdom, in teaching, with encouragement, administration, helps? You just GIVE IT AWAY and let that river run fast and strong, in Jesus’ mighty name!

“As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.” 1 Peter‬ ‭4:10-11‬
