Which Road Are You On?

  • Which road are you on? Matt 7:13-14
  • 13 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.
  • They say “every road leads to somewhere” and that’s true. Every road is going to somewhere
  • We use our GPS a lot- many people are too dependent on it- we’ve been lead astray by it
  • We spend a lot of time planning our trips, staying away from traffic, cops, etc.
  • First road trip- friend gave me a paper map-ended up needing it in the middle of nevada
  • do you think about the spiritual road you’re on? How often are you calibrating that?
  • Jesus is using a road analogy here with his disciples and honestly- it couldn’t be more clear
  • Take the narrow road- not the wide road. Wide road leads to destruction- difficult is the way
  • There’s a video that I’d like to show that encapsulates this idea of the narrow road v the wide road and that difficult is the way.
  • PLEASE PLAY VIDEO Thank you for coming today- that concludes our sermon.
  1. The narrow road
  • Jesus starts out and says “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction,”
  • The word picture he’s saying here is obvious- there’s a small area in which you will find salvation and if you take the wide area- its destruction
  • Which gate he was referring to is irrelevant- what is relevant is he is speaking directly about the following of himself as leading to eternal life and salvation- and he says “it’s a narrow road”
  • The video showed this- not biblical- but cool image- only one little hole to go through!
  • Luke 13:24 “Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able.
  • If you asked any random person if they wanted to go to heaven- without clarifying- most would say yes- obviously- who wants hell? Many people will seek to enter- but will not be able
  • Why? 1. They don’t believe in Jesus as the only way to heaven.
  • John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
  • Christianity is an exclusive proposition- its an all or nothing endeavor- (its not being ‘good’)
  • People say Christians are narrow minded people- and we are! Exclusively and demonstratively
  • Jesus is THE only way – all other ways are wrong this is not A way it is THE way
  • John 10:9 I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. 1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus, ONE MEDIATOR- Belief in the blood of Jesus is all that saves from SIN ONLY
  • These are Jesus words. Islam wont get you to heaven, Buddhism, Sikhism, Taoist, wiccan etc consequently statism or secular humanism wont get you there either. ONLY JESUS
  • John 3:3636 He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”
  • Ezekiel 18:27-32 READ The ways of God are not fair- this is God’s historic way- repentance!
  • The Bible give some very clear ways to stay on the narrow road- believe in Jesus live different
  • 2. They trust in themselvesProverbs 16:25 There is a way that seems right to a man,But its end is the way of death.- This is the real pandemic– people trust they can get themselves to heaven
  • 3. They refuse to separate from the world- 2 Cor 6:17 Therefore “Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you.”
  • To be narrow- Separate yourself from wickedness, the ways of the world,  desires of the flesh
  • Romans 16:17 watch out for those who cause divisions Titus 3:10 have nothing more to do with him,2 Thes 3:6 keep away from any brother who is walking in idleness and not in accord with the tradition 2 John 1:10 do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, Eph 5:11 Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, 1 Cor 15:33  “Bad company ruins good morals.”2 Tim 3:5 Avoid such people.2 Cori 7:1 cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, 2 Cor 6:14-Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. Pro 13:20 the companion of fools will suffer harm.1 John 2:15Do not love the world or the things in the world1 Peter 1:16  “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”2 The 3:14 have nothing to do with him1 Cori 5:11  not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one.Ro12:2 Do not be conformed to this world,
  • But people don’t want the narrow road- they don’t want to separate themselves from the world– they don’t want to live by a code of love, mercy, forgiveness, service and self sacrifice
  • People want all the lusts of the world– they want to be liked by the world and loved by people
  • Luke 14:33 So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.
  • This is serious business! JESUS owns you all day every day no matter what- all of your life.
  • Proverbs 9:6 Forsake foolishness and live, And go in the way of understanding.
  1. The wide road
  • Going back to that video- do you remember how small the hole was? Do you also notice how wide the area was around it? The sport itself is dangerous- but much less dangerous to just stick to flying without trying to go through a narrow hole
  • The bible wasn’t talking about a wingsuit- but the word picture here plays
  • It would appear taking a wide road would have less danger than a narrow road
  • “wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.” Its easy to find the wide road- it’s the road that everyone is on-
  • If I’m on a footpath,, a road etc, I want wide. I want room to move, make mistakes, have some wiggle room- the wide road seems like a safe bet- the narrow road seems like not
  • Jesus says- trust me- follow me on the narrow road. Have less control, less vision, less comfort. Be in that uncomfortable following me and trusting me life.
  • Jesus says- many go the wide path. That’s the path of the world. Thinking 167 is the way to go
  • WIDE ROAD- Philippians 3:19 whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame—who set their mind on earthly things. Romans 3:16 Destruction and misery are in their ways; WIDE ROADRevelation 21:8 But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
  • The wide road is easy to see and find- you just go along with what the world does
  • My son is a real estate agent- he was in a deal recently where most people wouldn’t have been as honest as he was- could have cost him money to be so honest
  • “any preexisting” He says- Dad, I wasn’t going to go to Hell for lying- Good job son
  • But that’s the wide road- if the warranty co asks- most wouldn’t tell the wobbly toilet
  • The wide road thinks about things of this world, not on heavenly things, it doesn’t forgive, love, serve, the wide road is the road that everyone else takes- you go narrow
  • The “Romans road” is a term people use for salvation- this wide road would be the road that leads to destruction- It is not a good road- its filled with sin, destruction, damnation
  • Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.Ezekiel 18:20 The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.
  • Galatians 6:7-8 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. 8 For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life.
  • We talk about sin a lot- do you know why? Because you go to church with people who are steeped in sin and I want them to be delivered
  • A few weeks ago- a brother came to me, wanted to repent of some sin in his marriage-  he was starting an emotional affair with someone- repented to God, wife, me
  • It was the WORD that convicted him– this had been ongoing- but by the grace of God he responded- his wife forgave them, marriage was saved-I’m giving you the simple version
  • Will you respond to prick of Sin? Will you sit through talk of sin to save your brother/sister? Will you stay away from the wide road and encourage others to do the same?
here’s a big problem with sin Romans 6:16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?
  • When you are stuck in a sin, you feel enslaved- you want freedom, forgiveness!
  • Isaiah 3:11  Woe to the wicked! It shall be ill with him, IT MAKES YOU FEEL ILL
  • Ecc 8:13 But it will not be well with the wicked; nor will he prolong his days, which are as a shadow, because he does not fear before God.
  • This is what conviction of the holy spirit does- it convicts and brings you refreshing
  • Acts 3:19 Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,
  • Its so refreshing to come off the wide road to the narrow road. The narrow road is safe
  • The narrow road has sweet sleep. No guilt. No shame. No angst. Truth and life
  • Streams of living water flow by the narrow road. The wide road has pot holes and thickets
  1. Few find it
  • 14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.- Jesus says there are not as many people saved as those arent
  • Sin is complicated. Grace is easy, but for whatever reason, people still choose the difficult path
  • I really don’t get it. But few find it.  Here’s some interesting statistics
  • Increases in approval of moral issues– Gay/Lesbian relations 63+23Having a baby outside of marriage 62+17Fornication 69+16 Divorce 73+14 Polygamy 17 +10 Doctor-assisted suicide 57+8 Cloning humans 14+7 Pornography 36+6 Suicide 18 +5 https://news.gallup.com/poll/210542/americans-hold-record-liberal-views-moral-issues.aspx
  • Only 29% say it is very important for a couple to marry if they have a child from 38% in 2013
  • Only 24 percent of Americans believe the Bible is the literal word of God. That’s down from 26. 26 percent say it’s a book full of fables. https://news.gallup.com/poll/210704/record-few-americans-believe-bible-literal-word-god.aspx
  • Matthew 22:14 “For many are called, but few are chosen.”
  • And we see it- Being a Bible believing Christian is exceptional. Its not the norm
  • Now- roughly 6 percent of the people of auburn attend auburn churches by my math
  • So- as abysmal as 24% is, why do only 6% attend church? Are they on the wide road?
  • Or maybe its difficult for those to find it.- you believe its literal- but you don’t do what it says
  • Jesus made it hard- Matthew 13:13 Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.
  • Those people who are going to get saved and make it to heaven are going to have to put in a little bit of effort to even be able to hear the word.
  • This eyes and ears thing has been going on for thousands of years-
  • Ezekiel 12:2 “Son of man, you dwell in the midst of a rebellious house, which has eyes to see but does not see, and ears to hear but does not hear; for they are a rebellious house.
  • People have the ability to see and hear what God is doing- but for whatever reason, they either choose to ignore it, or haven’t heard it- I think its that they choose to ignore it
  • Immediate gratification seems more satisfying than waiting- The pleasures of the flesh are right now- eternity seems like forever away- the pleasures of sin outweigh the pleasures of eternity
  • People are blinded by the God of this age according to 2 Corinthians 4:3-4
  • It seems like it should be easy- free salvation- live in Christ- have a great life- go for eternity
  • But its difficult for people to find this- the narrow road seems cumbersome- wide road is fun
  • So what must we do? Be diligent! Stay on the narrow road! Away from the wide road
  • 2 Peter 1:10 Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble;
  • Stay in the church- in the word, in fellowship. Don’t let anything fester- eternity is at stake!
  • 2 Peter 3:17 You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked;
  • The error of the wicked- and what is the error of the wicked? Taking the wide road
  • Let me end with this- if you’re saved- you’re saved- you don’t have to worry you didn’t find it
  • Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
  • 1 John 3:21  Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God.
  • Have confidence- don’t walk in fear- walk in faith- this isn’t about questioning your faith
  • This is an encouragement to you that you have found it- that you are IN the faith- that you KNOW the truth- praise God for that! What a blessing!
  • We just want to go on what the Bible says-
  • Hebrews 6:11 And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end,
  • Just be diligent. Stay the course- keep loving Jesus and being faithful!
  • Matthew 10:22 And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.
  • Stay the course! Stay narrow- not wide. Stay faithful- you’ve found it!
  • Give your life to Jesus today
