Matthew 9:18-26
Do you believe Jesus? That he will do for other people? That he will do for you? Have you made room for him?
- “She will live”
- In the beginning of this story- we see a ruler that comes to Jesus and worships him
- Interesting to note- That Jesus did not stop this ruler from worshipping him- why? Because he was God in the flesh. He accepted people’s worship because he was God. Lets join the story
- 18 While He spoke these things to them, behold, a ruler came and worshiped Him, saying, “My daughter has just died, but come and lay Your hand on her and she will live.” 19 So Jesus arose and followed him, and so did His disciples
- This ruler, whomever he was- saw and heard of Jesus and he put his faith in Jesus that he could heal his daughter- This man- however powerful and influential he may have been- knew- Jesus can do it. My daughter- she will live- all I need is for Jesus to just come and lay a hand on her
- The Bible doesn’t say it- but I like to think that people in the OT had to have known a bit of scripture
- Maybe- Psalm 42:5-6: Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.
- Somehow- this man knew where he needed to put his faith- and it was in JESUS- and watch this- it wasn’t even for himself- it was for his DAUGHTER. End of his rope- no where to turn
- Here’s the belief- it wasn’t even for himself- it was for SOMEONE ELSE. He BELIEVED for SOMEONE ELSES Miracle- A dead person who had no life that couldn’t believe for themselves
- Job 42:10 And the Lord restored Job’s losses when he prayed for his friends. Indeed the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before.
- What does it mean to you
- Are you praying for your friends and family in faith? Are you believing that God can heal them?
- This week- Daneysha surgery- working on this sermon- SHE WILL LIVE- SHE WILL LIVE
- I was believing God for her this whole week- While she was in surgery- SHE WILL LIVE
- I’m her pastor- What do you think her husband was believing? SHE WILL LIVE
- James 5:16 says The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.
- I’m not exactly sure what fervent prayer looks like- but I’m guessing its powerful.
- Paul admonished Timothy to pray- to believe and pray for all men-
- 1 Timothy 2:1 Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men,
- In ephesians too Ephesians 6:18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints—
- There are people who either- cant or wont pray for themselves and believe for themselves- believe for them- pray for them- speak SHE WILL LIVE over them- believe Jesus CAN and WILL.
- Did Jesus not say- John 14:13 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
- I believe that scripture- I believe that Jesus hears my prayer- I put my faith in him- I believe that he can and will move in peoples lives- I know it- I have seen it-
- There are have been seasons of my life where the Devil has taken up a mission upon my wife- Many years ago- I was plumb tired of it and went into a fast for 3 days for
- Romans 12:12 rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer;
“I shall be made well”
- The next part of this story is great- You’ve probably heard it before- Its oft spoken of
- 20 And suddenly, a woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years came from behind and touched the hem of His garment. 21 For she said to herself, “If only I may touch His garment, I shall be made well.” 22 But Jesus turned around, and when He saw her He said, “Be of good cheer, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And the woman was made well from that hour.
- Few things from this passage- 1 She had been infirmed for 12 years- long time 2. She had a false superstition that Jesus clothing had power 3. She had belief in Jesus ability without understanding
- You can have Faith in Jesus without fully understanding Jesus- You can just know he’s powerful.
- Psalm 28:7 The Lord is my strength and my shield; My heart trusted in Him, and I am helped; Therefore my heart greatly rejoices, And with my song I will praise Him.
This woman- after 12 years of dealing with a hemorrhage goes to Jesus- much like the ruler- this was probably her last ditch effort- who knows what other things she had tried- but she says - I WILL BE MADE WELL- I know it- I just know it- I know this Jesus can do it. I shall be made well-
- I wont have to deal with this anymore- I wont have to struggle anymore- I wont have to bleed
- 1 Timothy 4:10 For to this end we both labor and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe.
- What does it mean to you
- Who exactly are you believing is going to make you well? A person? A process? A government?
- There are somethings that can be fixed on this side of heaven- but not everything can be fixed by man- you need Dr. Jesus to step in and make it happen- You need him to show up and help
- John 14:1 “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.
- That’s what he said- can we take Jesus at his word? Can we trust that he can and will?
- Do you know why people don’t believe Jesus? 1 They don’t seek after him 2. They don’t believe him 3. They have been let down 4 they are afraid of what might happen 5. pride
- Matthew 21:22 And whatever things you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.”
- What exactly have you been dealing with in your life?
- Troubles about your health? Your mind? You relationships? Your heart and soul?
- We talk a lot about repentance and sin- so don’t get what I’m going to say twisted- but we serve a right now he will do it kind of God
- These two stories specifically outline that Jesus does stuff for his people “Just because”
- That he wants to bless us- that he wants to take care of the details of our life- why couldn’t this daughter stay dead? Why couldn’t this woman continue to bleed? One may have been in heaven- one been fine for 12 years- some might say “What about her sin problem”
- What about it- Jesus wants to take care of that- yes- but he is a gracious loving father-
- 1 John 5:4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.
- Are you going through this life on your own and not bring Jesus into the equation? Are you doing it on your own strength? Or are you screaming out to God- I SHALL BE MADE WELL
- Whatever it is that you’re going through- whatever it is- run to the garment of Jesus-
- Scream- I WILL BE MADE WELL- Go and drink from the well- go and be healed
- Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
- He IS- I believe it- I’m not saying I wont suffer worldly affliction- or that I wont deal with stuff
- But I do believe that I will see good and not evil. I do believe that Jesus can and will take care of me- Why? Because he has- he has healed me- and my family- he has blessed me, and our church
- Please- hear my heart- I’m not saying Im better than you- or super spiritual- cause I’m not-
- I just have a deep sense of God’s abiding power to take care of the details of my life
- 2 Corinthians 5:7 For we walk by faith, not by sight.
- I’m not sure what the future holds but I know who holds the future- I know whose I am
- I don’t think I’m exceptional at the expense of someone else- I just believe God cares about me
- 1 Corinthians 2:5 that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.
- That’s where my faith rests- That’s where I live in the power of God.
“Make room”
- 23 When Jesus came into the ruler’s house, and saw the flute players and the noisy crowd wailing, 24 He said to them, “Make room, for the girl is not dead, but sleeping.” And they ridiculed Him. 25 But when the crowd was put outside, He went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose. 26 And the report of this went out into all that land.
- The end of it- we see this rulers house and in what was normal at the time- they had flute players and mourners- there is historical proof that even the poorest of people paid instrumentalists and people to mourn when someone had died-
- So Jesus comes in and pushes through the crowd and tells them “Make room”
- It was crowded- It was tight fitting. It was noisy. And what I don’t get- is Jesus doesn’t come in and say “yeah man- she was dead dead, but look at me” he tells them that she’s sleeping?
- Did he not want them to worry? Or did he not want them to be concern? Slip away?
- Nonetheless- he heals the girl, AFTER they made room for him- ridiculed but made room.
- Psalm 10:4 The wicked in his proud countenance does not seek God; God is in none of his thoughts.
- Jesus couldn’t work in the place until they made room for him. They had to get out of the way and then Jesus could have his way- but they had to get out of the way
- I’m not making this thing say what it doesn’t say but it says what it says- crowded room- Jesus comes and says “make room” they make room for Jesus and then he is able to heal this girl.
- What does it mean to you?
- Are you making room for Jesus? Is your life so crowded that you can’t make room for him?
- Have the things of you life that seemingly seem dead, that you’re throwing a party for- merely sleeping because you haven’t made room for Jesus? Are you making room for him to move?
- Jesus can probably move with you in the way- but wouldn’t be better to make room for him?
- Let him into your cluttered overran overscheduled overdrawn physically and spiritually neglectful life and see him move?
- How can you see Jesus move if there is no margin in your life? You can’t share what you don’t have
- One of the greatest things you can do to make room for Jesus is to be spiritually transformed.
- You clean out your old way of thinking
- Romans 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
- Start to see things differently- transform your mind into the mind of Christ and see him move
- Make room in your mind for Jesus- start seeing thing spiritually and see what happens.
- 1 Corinthians 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.
- 1 Corinthians 2:14 But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
- You must start to see yourself as a spiritual being in a natural world.
- 1 Corinthians 15:44 It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.
- When is the last time you were going through it and thought with your mind- I need Jesus in here
- When is the last time you looked at your life and schedule and thought- this is a distraction
- I need to get rid of it- I don’t need to do it- I need to make room for Jesus- I’m not doing it
- 1 John 2:27 But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you [a]will abide in Him.
- See when you’re walking with Jesus you listen to Jesus. You make room for him- You don’t go somewhere- you give something away- you call someone- you stop by- you rearrange plans
- And on the other side- you see God move because you made room for him- you saw him move
- You don’t restrict your mind and schedule and the world sucks the truth of the scriptures out
- Mark 4:18-19 18 Now these are the ones sown among thorns; they are the ones who hear the word, 19 and the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.
- I know someone who just quit a job because of the spiritual component of it- I know someone else (not at this church) that I am seeing them destruct because of their work, church and city
- They are being consumed by the things that aren’t of God because they aren’t making ROOM
- Romans 8:5-8 READ The mind set on the flesh cannot submit to God
- Make room for Jesus in your heart
- Make room for Jesus in your schedule
- Make room for Jesus in your plans
- Make room for Jesus in your thoughts
