2 Sam 11 And someone said
- Someone should have said Guard Yourself
- David has come off of some really big victories. Quite the trajectory- Shepherd boy to Goliath slayer to being pursued to being King.
- From nothing-Charge of Israel- Many have conjectured what led up to this point in David’s life
- Most commentators agree- it was pride behind this escapade- Thinking of himself more highly than he ought- believing his own press clippings-
- Pride can bring anyone to think they are invincible- we see it in leaders all the time- Start believing they are something they are not- feeling like they can get away with anything- so they try to- give themselves over to the desires of the flesh (not just sex) No one is immune to them-
- David would not have ended up in this predicament if he had guarded himself.
- Had he realized the pressures of life, the success of life, and the dangers- he would have guarded himself and set guardrails around himself and his life to keep him from Murder/Sex
- Deuteronomy 22:8 “When you build a new house, then you shall make a parapet for your roof, that you may not bring guilt of bloodshed on your household if anyone falls from it.
Parapet- Cover- Defend- is the root KJV- A “battlement” - If you don’t protect the roof- someone falls off- and its on you-But ALSO Protect yourself
- Ex 21:28-29 and it has been made known to his owner, and he has not kept it confined,
- There is an accountability to lack of preparation- You KNOW what is going to happen
- You have violent dog that bites- Get rid of it. David didn’t put guard rails around his life
- He was untouchable at this point and decides to touch whatever he wants
- Proverbs 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall.
- Isaiah 2:11-12 The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, READ
- What does it mean to you
- Are you setting up guardrails and parapets in your life? Are you watching your success?
- Sometimes success is scarier than failure and people will self-destruct out of fear
- But we KNOW the weak areas of our life but we pretend we don’t need the guardrail
- Obadiah 3-4 The pride of your heart has deceived you, You who dwell in the clefts of the rock, Whose habitation is high; You who say in your heart, ‘Who will bring me down to the ground?’ 4 Though you ascend as high as the eagle, And though you set your nest among the stars, From there I will bring you down,” says the Lord.
- Pride can come in many forms- but when it comes to the sins that entangle- we think we are stronger than we are- God can save, deliver, set free, change, but wrong place, wrong time etc.
- Ive seen marriages destroyed, kids in jail, total and complete destruction- NO GUARDRAILS
- Don’t go to stupid places with stupid people doing stupid things at stupid times (No downtown)
- 1 Corinthians 6:18 Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body.
- RUN- Have NOTHING to do with it- Don’t dabble in it- No one falls in Grand Canyon from Texas
- Ephesians 5:3
- Someone should have said Stay in the fight (he should have been at war)
- 11:1 READ It happened in the spring of the year, at the time when kings go out to battle,
- Not only did David not Guard himself, he took himself out of the fight
- He never should have been there- if had been doing what he was supposed to be doing it never would have been an issue- He was supposed to be at war- but chose to stay home
- Ecclesiastes 3:8 A time to love, And a time to hate; A time of war, And a time of peace.
- This part of the Bible says that war was commonplace- “We war in the spring” lol- WAR
- Must have just been what they did- men went to war- that was their job
- Was he scared ? Was he lazy? Its not night time- couldn’t have seen her- Sleeping in the middle of the day, gets off his bed and starts looking around and sees a beautiful woman
- STOP- Right there is a decision point- he gave up on the physical war- but there’s a war for his eyes right here where this story could have taken a different turn
- Some say Bathsheba enticed him- (and women should show modesty) but David had a mental choice here- FIGHT or FLOUNDER- He chose flounder- Gave himself over to Lust NO FIGHT
- Would have appreciated “And David went in and prayed, and fought, but 3 days later gave in”
- Joel 3:9 Proclaim this among the nations: “Prepare for war! Wake up the mighty men, Let all the men of war draw near, Let them come up.
- THIS WAS A WAR FOR HIS SOUL AND HIS POSTERITY- and he Didn’t even FIGHT it
- What does it mean to you
- Are you in the fight or are you under dereliction of duty? Have you just given yourself over?
- Many people don’t even enter into the fight- they just give themselves over
- 1 Timothy 6:12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
- Most people aren’t even in the fight- they just let life control them
- GET IN THE FIGHT- Your Soul matters! And not just sexual sin- all of it- But there’s a window
- GYM- Curls, Gal next to me, Don’t look- think etc. etc Crystal- You ok? Who? Come at dif time
- Jer 46:3-4 “Order the buckler and shield, And draw near to battle! 4 Harness the horses, And mount up, you horsemen! Stand forth with your helmets, Polish the spears, Put on the armor!
- I want to end well! I want to honor God with my life- I’ll take whatever help I can get
- Ezekiel 38:7 “Prepare yourself and be ready, you and all your companies that are gathered about you; and be a guard for them.
- Someone should have said Listen to a rebuke (the dude told him it was another’s wife)
- 11:3 So David sent and inquired about the woman. And someone said, “Is this not [a]Bathsheba, the daughter of [b]Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?”
- So David sends for Bathsheba and SOMEONE steps up and says hey man- isn’t this someone elses wife? I know her husband- Uriah- Good dude- BRO SOMEONES WIFE
- Interesting it just says “Someone” but great that SOMEONE stepped up.
- How different the trajectory if David would have listened to this rebuke- Ohhh WIFE- I’m out
- Proverbs 27:5 Open rebuke is better Than love carefully concealed.
- Someone cared about David. Someone cared about his future. SOMEONE spoke up
- Dude- you don’t want to DO THIS- This is BAD. This is DESTRUCTIVE- FLEE NO LETS GO
- But sadly- David didn’t respond to it- he just moves onto the next READ 4-5
- No pause- No reception- no responding- Set on his prepurposed plan- I’m DOING this
- SOMONE was a friend to him and didn’t even know it- not even recorded- SOMEONE
- Proverbs 27:6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend, But the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.
- What does it mean to you
- Some of yall need to be a SOMEONE in someones life and some of ya’ll need to RECEIVE someone who is trying to help you-
- People don’t like my preaching- Its in your face- its gritty- Some say angry- I’m not angry
- Man- I love you guys so much- I just want to encourage you to stay away from SIN
- I know the guilt and shame of sin- I am doing all I can to protect you from it- No blood on me
- Revelation 3:19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent.
- I’m coming to you in Love- Its for YOUR benefit- but people get SO offended about it-
- There’s no offense in truth- But it has to be in love- Remind yourself your pastor loves you
- Galatians 6:1 Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.
- Be loving- be gentle- but your friend can’t receive a rebuke that isn’t spoken- “don’t do that”
- And if someone has courage enough to lovingly point it out- RECEIVE IT-
- Think about a time you rejected a rebuke and what happened- or one that never came.
- 2 Timothy 3:16-17 READ- Its useful- and its for YOU- Its based on the WORD and not preference.
- Someone should have said Don’t Plan to sin (Then David sent messengers)
- David sent messengers after the rebuke. He chose sin. He chose destruction.
- He ignored the rebuke and set himself on the path of destruction the end result?
- V 26 But the thing that David had done displeased the Lord.
- God is never pleased with sin- He’ll forgive it, but I don’t think he’s ever pleased with it
- David knew it was wrong but did it anyway James 1:15 Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.
- That’s where sin starts- in desire, but left unchecked- turns to destruction-
- David figured it out eventually- He wrote- Psa 7: 14 Behold, the wicked brings forth iniquity; Yes, he conceives trouble and brings forth falsehood.
- David said- Psalm 36:1-4 READ
- He figured out what the wicked do- They Plan to sin- The set the course and Go
- What does it mean to you
- Don’t plan to sin. I know I have in my life- I didn’t listen to a rebuke, or set myself up in a way to do what I had prepared in my heart to do- the guilt and shame is unbearable.
- Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
- Death is the only outcome of sin- its never good- its always bad. Quit the plan.
- Romans 6:16 Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?
- We want to submit to the Lord’s righteousness in every area of our lives
- He will forgive, but Shall we continue in sin so grace may abound? BY NO MEANS
- Receive his forgiveness today if you need it- he loves you.
