DOES GOD CHANGE? Scripture declares that God is the same yesterday, today and forever. “For I am the LORD, I do not change; Therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob.” Malachi 3:6 “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Hebrews 13:8 Jesus is the Word made flesh. He is our faithful High Priest and He lives forever to make intercession for us.
God is faithful to keep His covenant promises. He is just in all His ways. He is merciful and keeps loving-kindness to a thousand generations. He will do what He said He would do. He is holy and righteous and worthy of all praise. He set a boundary for the ocean that it should not overtake the land and He keeps that boundary….can He not keep you?
Because His character does not change, we can fully trust in and rely on Him and that He will bring His Word to fruition. God does not change. Yet, Scripture reveals that He will change His mind. He is not finicky like a double-minded man nor is He absent-minded. Because He desires to show mercy, He responds to the prayers of His people. Whom am I that the Lord of all the earth would choose to hear my prayers? His nature is to respond to our cries.
His nature is that of a good Father to show kindness and mercy to His creation. In Jonah, God responded to a nation’s repentance. Instead of destruction, He gave mercy. This is directly in line with His character. He would have destroyed Israel, yet He responded to Moses’ intercession, David’s repentance, Elijah’s prayer for rain, Abraham’s interceding for Sodom (of which God could not find even 10 righteous souls in that wicked city), Hezekiah’s humble prayer for his life.
He hears our cries, responds in mercy and will change His mind about His course of action. Yet, Scripture also decrees that “if I hold iniquity in my heart, God does not hear me”. God does not hear ALL prayers. He does not hear the prayer of the wicked or those who hold onto sin: John 9:31, Psalm 66:18, Proverbs 15:29. God hears and responds to the prayers of the repentant heart, the humble one, “For God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble”. He responds to the righteous, repentant intercessor, pleading for lost souls.
His desire is to show mercy, therefore He responds to the merciful prayers. If you are in Christ, you have His ear, He hears you and He will respond in that way in which He deems best for you. God is not done! Get on your knees and cry out in sackcloth in ashes.
The prayer of the repentant and righteous man avails much to change His mind. “When I shut up heaven and there is no rain, or command the locusts to devour the land, or send pestilence among My people, if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to prayer made in this place.”II Chronicles 7:13-15 NKJV#runyourrace
