WHAT ABOUT THEM?? In my dealings with most people, this is what I often hear when dealing with a spirit of offense, “But you don’t know what they did to me!” People don’t really want to change, they just want others to change. People don’t want to forgive, but they want others to forgive. People pray for God to deal with others, but rarely themselves. Listen up!
The sooner you understand this, the better it will go for you. God is interested in changing you. He wants to deal with your heart and your mind. The minute we begin to think we are “good” and that “they” are the ones with the problem; we deceive ourselves. This is especially true in a marriage. We often tend to look at others through a microscope and ourselves through rose-colored glasses. The only person God can change is the one who wants to be changed. Mainly, He is interested in dealing with Y.O.U. This prayer should be part of our daily prayers,
“Search me [thoroughly], O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there is any wicked or hurtful way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
At sometime, you have to stop blaming others and let God deal with your own heart. Trust me on this, there is always something in all of us that God is working on. No one has arrived at that “I am perfect in all my ways” phase of life. Let God deal with you. Do you want answered prayer? Well, the above psalm is a prayer He WILL ALWAYS answer. When will you stop portraying yourself as the victim? This too is meaningless. Victimhood is a crutch and you will always remain in a defeated position until you appropriate the power of the Spirit and put on the mind of Christ.
If you cannot get over “what they did to you”, there’s a few things going on: 1) you may not truly be born again. If you understand the cross and that it was because of your sin that He had to face a bloody death; then you would never hold anything against anyone, ever.
The cross changes you. 2) you are blinded by pride. You say to yourself, “I am not like the publican”. In your self-righteousness, you condemn yourself and block the flow of grace in your life. 3) you are believing the lies of the enemy over God’s Word. 4) you are making what someone did to you greater than what He did, you are limiting the power of the cross and the Word of God and operating in the gross sin of unbelief. Pick your poison.
Get over yourself. The Creator of the universe can heal all things. Humble yourself and He will lift you up. Appropriate by faith the blood of the Lamb, renew your mind to His Word and keep your eyes on your own race. Let God deal with the wicked, that’s not your job. Let Him change your heart, that is your job.
“Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. Therefore “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”
Romans 12:17-21 NKJV
