WHO IS THE TRUE HERO? The one who has self control. The one who restrains her lips and her actions. This is not just a NT principle, but an old one as well, “He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, And he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.” Proverbs 16:32
You might say God doesn’t change and neither do His requirements. It’s better to bless someone than to curse them. It is more honorable to build up than to destroy. God’s design has always been for men to forgive an offense rather than to seek their own justice. Jesus did not set new rules, just showed us the truth of the old. The Pharisees made their own “doctrines of men”, and laid heavy burdens on people of which they themselves could not do.
Yes, there is a time for war. Men like David and Joshua were commanded specifically to physical war in order to bring about God’s promises for Israel. He has kept His promise to give them that land, even unto today. But the hero wars in the spirit and turns the other cheek. It takes confidence in God to allow others to curse and spit on you and do nothing in return but pray, “Father forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Self control and meekness is valued far above the “mighty” of the world.
Now, meekness is not weakness. The hero prays boldly and commands demons to depart. The heroic is not rash in spirit or in words, but is mighty through God. The hero knows where her help comes from, so she does not panic or get upset. She’s calm and collected, ruling over her own spirit because she understands her words have authority. The hero tears down strongholds, principalities and powers, not people. “Whoever has no rule over his own spirit Is like a city broken down, without walls.”Proverbs 25:28 NKJV“So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.”James 1:19-20 NKJV#runyourrace
