Sow What?

Sow what?

  • What we do with the Word of God matters to us- How we receive it, what we do with it, and how we apply it to our lives matters.
  • The parable of the sower is what we are going to cover today- big portion of scripture- but we must cover it all at once because Jesus himself is going to explain to us what the parable means
  • Jesus said this about this parable-Mark 4:13 And He said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables?
  • The primacy of understanding and applying this parable cannot be understated- if you are in this room today- you need to lean in, remove distractions, internalize and apply this sermon today-your very soul is as stake- you must understand it!
  • READ Matthew 13:1-8
  • Now- we’ll get into the meaning of this in a moment- because later in the scripture Jesus explains this to us himself- so just hold on and we’ll get to it but let me give you a sneak peek-
  • The seed is the Word. God’s ONLY tool is the Word of God. Everything He does, He does through the Word!
  • The sower is God. He is scattering seed daily and Satan is trying to pick it up.
  • The ground is you. The ground determines all the results of the sowing.
  • So your job- is make sure you are good ground to receive the word so you don’t end up like the other ground- anyone who has planted will tell you- soil prep is paramount!
  • Isaiah 55:11 So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.
  • Matthew 13:10-17
  • Before we get to the explanation- his disciples ask him “why do you speak to us in parables”
  • Fair question- some of these parables are easy- but some are cryptic- but they all MEAN something- Jesus is speaking to his disciples to direct THEM (why unsaved cant ed. Me)
  • There’s 2 parts to that answer– first part is that it is a fulfillment of prophecy-
  • Jesus quotes Isaiah 6:9 And He said, “Go, and tell this people: ‘Keep on hearing, but do not understand; Keep on seeing, but do not perceive.’
  • Which is to say- this prophecy is fulfilled- I’m speaking stuff but there’s some people who aren’t going to understand it- they just aren’t- that’s been the plan all along-
  • Here’s the second part- the use of parables is a judgment upon those who are hearing that are in sin because of their unbelief, so Jesus pronounces judgment on them in that they can’t understand- God’s judgment is upon those who reject the message-
  • One commentary said this- their present moral blindness and deafness are represented as the reason for the use of parables. Parables are themselves the punishment; the people are fit for nothing else
  • They have the ABILITY to hear and understand, but they don’t have the WILLINGNESS to apply it to actually grow in their acceptance of Jesus- so Jesus refuses to plainly speak to them- they can just be confused until they are ready to receive it.
  • He says- v14 For the hearts of this people have grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, And their eyes they have closed, Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them.’
  • But he has this encouragement to those who are willing to hear– 16 But blessed are your eyes for they see, and your ears for they hear; 17 for assuredly, I say to you that many prophets and righteous men desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.
  • Here’s what I want to do- right now- bow your head and close your eyes- do you want to know what Jesus is saying? Do you want to understand what he is trying to do in your heart?
  • Its like this- have you ever been in a situation that someone is trying to explain to you how to do something, and its not that easy, so you act dumb so they will just get frustrated and do it themselves? You’re unwilling to learn!
  • Or- Have you ever had someone explain something to you in detail you have no interest in learning, so you act like you are listening, but you really are just letting them talk? Listening, but not hearing.
  • Pray- Lord Jesus- I am open to what you want to say- please make my ears, mind, and heart able to receive that what you are about to speak to me
  • So lets hear Jesus explanation of the Sower- Matthew 13:18-23
  1. First heart- Wayward heart
  • 18 “Therefore hear the parable of the sower: 19 When anyone hears the word of the kingdom, and does not understand it, then the wicked one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is he who received seed by the wayside.
  • The description here is simple- as a farmer who is planting rows- don’t be on wayside
  • And you can see- if seed is thrown here- and not planted in good soil, very easy for birds
  • Jesus uses this example and says- that’s the heart that is on the edge of where it needs to be-
  • You want to be in the right proximity to receiving the word- not on the side- in the CENTER
  • Let me explain- there are some people whom God gives over to a depraved mind that aren’t going to receive God’s word Romans 1:28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting;
  • And then there’s some people, who hear the truth and immediately reject it because they have no intention of listening to it- Romans 2:8 but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness—indignation and wrath,
  • And maybe it’s a not-understanding- some deep things of God that aren’t easily grasped, but there are very simple things that people  flat out refuse to believe or apply when they hear it.
  • There are people who attend- or have attended this church and will hear a scripture about forgiving and refuse to forgive, give and not give, stop sexual immorality and continue in it.
  • Bible talks about applying the word to our lives! Hebrews 2:1 Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away.
  • Because that’s what happens- in the sower and in our lives- we hear the word, but if we don’t apply it- it gets snatched up and then we drift away.
  • Why do people not believe me? Those who don’t apply the word drift away–
  • And where it comes in- is through Satan- through deceitful little seeds of doubt that can pull you away to the wiles of Satan. He wants you to get away from Jesus so he’ll do anything
  • So how do we combat Satan pulling the seed away?
  • James 1:21 Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls
  • You have to purge the sin out of your life and receive the word for what it is.
  • When you hear it- you say “I’m going to line my life up with that word right now”
  • You have the receive the word with meekness- instead of arguing with the word in your mind and heart- you just receive it- you do what it says and receive the correction.
  • Proverbs 7:1-2My son, keep my words, And treasure my commands within you. 2 Keep my commands and live, And my law as the apple of your eye.
  • What a pleasure his commands are to help us LIVE- they are not burdensome.
  • But you have to receive them with FAITH- you have to BELIEVE them.
  • Hebrews 4:2 For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it.
  1. Second heart- Rootless Heart
  • 20 But he who received the seed on stony places, this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; 21 yet he has no root in himself, but endures only for a while. For when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles.
  • The explanation of this part is simple- be rooted or when persecution comes, you’ll stumble
  • And this is what I’ve seen among Christians over the past 18 months- not rooted- tribulation comes, and they stumble. They weren’t prepared for what was coming.
  • Now some of you have been around for a few years- and you’ll notice- our church has been preparing you for tribulation for years. This season is no surprise, and you’re not faltering.
  • Why? You’re rooted. You’re grounded. You’ve been taught to believe in God and his word
  • Matthew 11:6 And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.”
  • You’ve walked out that scripture and said “even if it offends me- I’m going to be rooted”
  • And so now- when you’re walking through this- its annoying but its not breaking you.
  • You are 2 Corinthians 4:9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed—
  • And that only happens when you receive the word and get ROOTED- THEN you can ENDURE
  • But who do you GET rooted?
  • STAY IN LOVE Eph 3:17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love,- Have faith in Christ- but be grounded in LOVE
  • That means- and I believe this- if you don’t love everyone you don’t love anyone-
  • Just love people- love those that don’t deserve it. Give them your time.
  • When you come from a position of love you’re less defensive, offensible, paranoid, worrisome
  • Unloving people are exploitive. Untrusting. Hoard their resources.
  • DON’T FORGET 2 Peter 1:8-9 READ and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins.
  • Don’t forget where you came from- Don’t forget that you were a sinner saved by Grace.
  • STAY IN THE VINE John 15:5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. (Worship, prayer, service WORD)
  • KEEP HIS WORD John 14:23 Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.
  • Colossians 2:7 1 John 4:16 2 Thessalonians 2:10
  1. Third heart- Deceived Heart
  • 22 Now he who received seed among the thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful.
  • This one is simple as well- If you’re overly concerned with the affairs of this world and want money more than anything- the word will not be fruitful in your life. You’re divided
  • There’s this guy I used to know- always jumping from job to job, always complaining about money, wife, kids, health, etc. But never full submission to the word- always concerned with the cares of this world- divorce, destruction, still broke, angry, unhealthy etc.
  • Because his hearts desire was never the things of God- it was just what God could give him- business connections, social connections, and as soon as something else came- gonzo-
  • Psalm 52:7 “Here is the man who did not make God his strength, But trusted in the abundance of his riches, And strengthened himself in his wickedness.”
  • 1 Timothy 6:9-10 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
  • Money isn’t the problem- you can have money just don’t let it have YOU.
  • Psalm 62:10 If riches increase, Do not set your heart on them.
  • Luke 12:15 And He said to them, “Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.”
  • Ecclesiastes 5:10-11 He who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver; Nor he who loves abundance, with increase. This also is vanity. 11 When goods increase, They increase who eat them; So what profit have the owners Except to see them with their eyes?
  • Proverbs 11:28 He who trusts in his riches will fall, But the righteous will flourish like foliage.
  1. Fourth heart- Grounded Heart
  • 23 But he who received seed on the good ground is he who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.”
  • We want to be that good ground- that’s who we want to be- we want to understand it, bear fruit, and produce with it-
  • God’s word does not return void. Especially if we are good ground.
  • But how? Not a wayward heart, not a rootless heart, not a deceived heart. A GOOD heart that positions itself in GOOD soil- to receive the word in their heart and watch it work.
  • BE IN THE RIGHT PLACE- Jeremiah 7:2“Stand in the gate of the Lord’s house,
  • You have to position yourself to hear it
  • RECEIVE THE SPIRIT_ Gal 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
  • GET PLANTED- Psalm 92:13-15 READ stop jumping around- stay put- get grounded.
  • James 1:22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
  • Grounded heart- humble, reality of sin, need for savior, makes God the priority
  • If you have a good heart, in a good place, with good soil, you’ll get a good return for Jesus
  • Right now- if you didn’t understand this- pray for God to change your heart-
  • Right now- Give your life to Jesus to have him renew your mind-
