I WANT SPIRITUAL ABS. The abdominals are the hardest muscle to develop, specifically on women because we naturally carry around an extra layer of fat on the torso. It takes a rigorous, disciplined, restricted and regulated routine of diet and exercise. Even in my most athletic days, when I trained 3 hours a day and lifting weights was an idol in my life; I still did not have the abdominal definition that I worked hard to attain. Not to mention the abs are in a secret place only my husband is supposed to see. All that work and I’m not even supposed to show them off. Ladies, cover up your abdomen. A sports bra is not a top. Save it for your spouse.
“As a ring of gold in a swine’s snout, So is a lovely woman who lacks discretion.”
Proverbs 11:22
But, I want those spiritual abs- the ones only my Lord can see, the muscles that are only produced through a restricted diet and a rugged discipline over the flesh. They are supposed to be covered and produced in the secret place; they are for His eyes only. Unless of course you flash them to the world to say, “Look at my abdominal muscles! Look how disciplined I am! Look at my work for the Lord!” Then you are flashing your pride and eroding those secret works to the Lord. If you’d be honest with yourself, it wasn’t really for Him, it was for man’s approval and your own self esteem.
“The secret [of the sweet, satisfying companionship] of the Lord have they who fear (revere and worship) Him, and He will show them His covenant and reveal to them its [deep, inner] meaning.” Psalm 25:14
What’s interesting about the above Scripture is that the word “secret” in Hebrew means “couch”. It’s a reference to an intimate place where you would share the deep and “secret” things with a trusted friend. It reveals to us that there are things that are only between you and the One you worship. He reveals His covenant promises to those who fear Him and He sits and fellowships with them in an intimate setting. There are things that are for His eyes only. It’s good and right that not everyone knows your work and discipline for Him. Do not show your abs to anyone but Him. Let the fear of God have its perfect work and you will find yourself dwelling in the secret place.
