THE GIANT IS TAUNTING and the enemy has you surrounded. What do you do? The Assyrian army surrounded Jerusalem and a letter of intimidation was read to the people and given to King Hezekiah. At this point in history, the Assyrians has conquered every nation and dominated all kingdoms.
King Hezekiah proclaimed to the people, “Do not answer!” “And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it; and Hezekiah went up to the house of the LORD, and spread it before the LORD.” II Kings 19:14 Hezekiah spread the lies, taunts, intimidation, and bullying before the Lord and prayed earnestly. He didn’t convene with anyone. He didn’t wring his hands in doubt and fear. He went straight up to the Lord and God answered in a big way.
I love this imagery of laying out a letter before the Lord. What faith in an awesome God who sees all, knows all, and cares. Years ago, I received a hate-filled, threatening letter. I read through it once and immediately began crying, fear filled me. I remember dropping to the floor and crying out to the Lord, Matt was out of country and I was all alone. A friend called right at that moment and I explained to her what happened. She said, “Don’t read it again and burn it”.
In my fear, I couldn’t think of what to do. I wanted to respond so badly to the hate and lies spewing forth from that letter, but instead I burnt it. See, God knew and He answered immediately through my friend. Those words will sink into your spirit and produce fear, if you let them. Is the enemy taunting you? No need to respond and do not fear. Lay it before the Lord.
