Tell No One
Mark 7:36 Then He commanded them that they should tell no one; but the more He commanded them, the more widely they proclaimed it.
• If Jesus isn’t your savior, you’ll always be disobedient
• There is a lot going on in this scripture-
• This guy gets healed by Jesus- spit and fingers in the ears- which is an interesting way to get healed- There’s really only one part I really want to focus on today
• Why did Jesus tell the people to not tell anyone and why were they disobedient?
1. Why did Jesus tell them to not tell anyone?
• Many places, Jesus told people to not tell anyone what had happened
• Mark 5:43 But He commanded them strictly that no one should know it,
• Matthew 9:30. And Jesus sternly warned them, saying, “See that no one knows it.”
• Luke 5:14 And He charged him to tell no one, Matthew 8:4 Jesus said to him, “See that you tell no one;
• There’s a few reasons- Jesus had a lot to accomplish and this wasn’t part of the list
• Jesus main reason to come wasn’t to heal people- It wasn’t his main mission- Healing was a WAY to be able to share his MESSAGE- it wasn’t his MESSAGE
• YOU DON’T HAVE TO ADD THESE SCRIPTURES He came into the world to be a faithful high priest. (Hebrews 2:17). to put away sin. (Hebrews 9:26). (I John 3:5). (John 1:29). to destroy the works of the devil. (I John 3:8). (Hebrews 2:14). (John 12:31). to seek the lost. (Luke 19:10). to save the lost. (Matthew 18:11). to serve. (Mark 10:45). to send a sword. (Matthew 10:34-36). to bear our sins. (I Peter 2:24). (Hebrews 9:28). to provide a pattern of holy living for Christians. (I Peter 2:21). (Matthew 11:29). to fulfill prophecy. (Matthew 5:17). (Romans 15:8). to abolish the law. (Ephesians 2:13-15). (Matthew 5:17-18). to give His life as a ransom. (Matthew 20:28). that men might have life more abundant. (John 10:10). to bring judgment. (John 9:39). to be king. (John 18:37). to bear witness to the truth. (John 18:37). He came to save sinners. (I Timothy 1:15). to reveal the Father. (Matthew 11:27). (John 14:9). to do the will of God. (Hebrews 10:9). to preach. (Luke 4:43). to bring fire. (Luke 12:49). (Matthew 3:11-12).
• Which isn’t to say that Jesus DOESN’T heal but that wasn’t his MAIN mission
• His MAIN message was to PREACH
• Jesus had words to say that would set people free- that would draw them into a relationship with the Father and to be freed from their sin
• Jesus knew people
• People, being the way that they are- would be inclined to follow the SIGNS not the SAVIOR
• The Pharisees wanted a sign from Jesus- but he refused to give them a sign from heaven-
• Matthew 16:4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.” And He left them and departed.
• The crowds that followed Jesus weren’t to listen to his message, it was to get the stuff that he was handing out
• They wanted to get the free stuff not the Word stuff
• Youll notice, the thousands of people who followed Jesus were no where to be found when he went to the cross
• Sure- Jesus had to go to the cross- but Jesus had enough followers that they could have overthrown Rome,
• But as soon as they saw that Jesus was going to the Cross- they were no where to be found
• What about you?
• Why are you seeking after Jesus?
• Is it for what you can get? Or what you can have? What position you can have?
• Luke 9:46 Then a dispute arose among them as to which of them would be greatest.
• No different than today- people want to serve Jesus until something comes around that puts them in a different place
• I have seen many people who stop serving Jesus after they don’t get the healing that they want, or after they see someone they love lose their life
• For some reason they think God isn’t God because someone died
• That’s a lie from the pit of Hell- Salvation is key- Just because someone died doesn’t mean God isn’t God
• You should be satisfied with your salvation- and if you’re not, why?
• Understanding the inheritance for sin should help you to appreciate the inheritance of eternal life
• But these dudes couldn’t keep it to themselves! They had to tell people!
• They wanted everyone to know-
• There were times that Jesus told people to go and tell
• Luke 8:39“Return to your own house, and tell what great things God has done for you.” And he went his way and proclaimed throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for him.
• But in this situation- he told them TELL NO ONE
• So what do we do with this scripture?
2. Go and tell no one
• Some people that were listening to Jesus apparently didn’t think that Jesus meant what he said when he said it “Go and tell no one”
• Now why did Jesus say this? Was he trying to entice these guys to go and tell it anyway? The take away close? “don’t do this” knowing that they would do it?
• Jesus was being humble- Most people would be like- Go and tell everyone
• But not Jesus- he tells these guys to tell no one- that his fame wouldn’t be of his own idea
• But here’s the truth of what happened- They were disobedient to what Jesus told them
• Simple message- Don’t tell anyone and they couldn’t do it
• It even says “the more he commanded them” even the one time wasn’t enough to keep them
• Jesus needed space
• If the crowds were too large- he couldn’t do his necessary ministry- it would create problems.
• It happened
• Mark 1:45 However, he went out and began to proclaim it freely, and to spread the matter, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter the city, but was outside in deserted places; and they came to Him from every direction.
• So Jesus had to show discretion on whom he was going to allow to go and tell these guys what they could tell
• He wanted them to keep it to themselves- so that the crowds of people who came weren’t coming for the wrong reasons and so the crowds wouldn’t prohibit his ministry
• Coming for the wrong reasons: I know a guy who would drop off his kids at a mega- church for the child care and then go on a hour long date with his wife- That’s not the purpose of the childrens ministry!
• This is why it chaps me up when people are like, parking is no good, or chairs, or sound, or bathrooms, or whatever other host of problems they can think of to not go to a church
• There is one reason to leave a church- Not preaching the true word of God.
• The purpose of Jesus ministry was always centered on getting people to come to Father
• It wasn’t for people to sit around and feel better about themselves.
• Here’s the truth- They were disobedient-
• These guys were supposed to do what Jesus asked them to do- not to tell anyone
• What it doesn’t say is that the guys who were disobedient were his disciples. I’m guessing it’s the crowd. Why would his disciples be disobedient to Jesus?
• Jesus taught his disciples to be obedient why?
• So their life would be better and they would experience God’s holiness- Obedience is a Christian word and one we should be striving towards?
• Jesus had some pretty strong words for those who were disobedient in Luke 12:42-48 READ
• 46 the master of that servant will come on a day when he is not looking for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.
• Did you catch that? Those servants who know better, who disregard the masters instructions will find themselves cut in two and have his portion with the unbelievers.
• Can someone be disobedient and still be considered a Christian?
• Here’s the truth- God’s grace is sufficient for us all- God can and will forgive anyone for anything
• But why would people choose to be disobedient? Why would people disregard a direct order from the Lord?
• Jesus tells us to forgive, and people choose not too. Jesus tells us to serve, and people choose not to. Jesus tells us to love others, we choose not to. Blatant disregard for the commands of scripture
• And when another Christian calls a person out on their disobedience? Hell hath no fury!
• But if you’re not being obedient to the Commands of Christ, how can you call yourself a Christian? You’re not. You have a belief in Jesus, but you’re not a follower of Jesus.
• You like the idea of Jesus you just don’t want to do what he says
• Luke 6:46 “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?
• Do you know what makes my kids my kids? When they do how I’ve taught them to be
• Few weeks ago, we took someone out to eat- my kids get pulled on this stuff all the time- after the meal, they went up to the couple and extended their hands and gave some hugs.
• Those are my kids. I want them to act that way. And if they didn’t do what I told them, they would get disciplined, because I’m training them to be the way I want them to be because I know whats best for them- They don’t know whats best for themselves yet.
• The scripture is clear-
• John 14:15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments.
• What does it mean to you?
• BE OBEDIENT TO JESUS-
• First- go with what you know- there are things that you know you should be doing and things you know you shouldn’t be doing that you need to be obedient to right now- today-
• 1 John 2:4-6 He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. 6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.
• Second- Learn what you need to know about Jesus to get your life to line up with his word
• Read his word and simply be obedient to it. Don’t over think it. Err on the side of obedience
• 1 John 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome
• The things of God are good for you- just do what they are and you’ll be blessed
• The people I know that aren’t blessed are the disobedient.
• Three- Submit to being obedient- Obedience is learned- its not natural-
• We are supposed to be teaching each other to be obedient.
• Coaching- all season- on the sidelines- final practice- play with them forget everything taught
• Matthew 28:20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
• Four- Realize that you are doing it for Jesus
• Acts 5:29 But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: “We ought to obey God rather than men.
• We’re all being obedient to someone or something- the question is- who are we being obedient to?
• Here’s the end-
• If you’re not a follower of Jesus, you’ll always be disobedient
• Perhaps you haven’t started following Jesus? Today is the day.
