WHILE “YOU” ARE THE TEMPLE of the Holy Spirit, your body being His residing place; “YOU” (plural, collectively) are being built up with other believers in a local congregation as the temple of God. The whole temple is holy.
Peter uses the same language and concept when he calls us “living stones” (individuals) being built up as a spiritual temple (collective). Paul emphasizes this principle in the following Scripture, “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him.
For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.” I Corinthians 3:16-17 The word he uses for “temple” is that of architectural language, as describing the OT temple. He presents one of the strongest warnings to anyone responsible for destroying a local congregation: God Himself will destroy that individual with terrible ruin.
Here’s a few ways people corrupt and destroy the church: immorality, fostering lies, deception and selfish ambition, promoting false doctrine, rejecting the Word and showing indifference to Scriptural truth, accepting sin and worldliness into the congregation. See, contrary to popular beliefs, it’s not about you. It’s about us, collectively, as a holy temple being built up (not tearing down), working together in unity for the purposes and plans of God. He is building His temple; so when you destroy a church, it’s not man’s work you’re destroying, but God’s.
