Three Hearts

1 sam 23:19-29 Title of Sermon- Three Hearts

  1. The heart of  A Ziphite-
  2. The Ziphites were descendants of Judah, just like David. They were supposed to be his brothers
  3. They were King Saul’s spies and they alerted Saul every time David took refuge in their land. Three things characterize a ZIPHITE.
  4. One- A Ziphite betrays his own tribe (they were of the tribe of Judah)
  5. The Ziphites were of the tribe of Judah- but when the chips were down- they turned on David and took up with Saul- and were willing to sell out David
  6. READ- V 19-20 and our part shall be to deliver him into the king’s hand.
  7. Why were they even involved? They had no beef with David- They just wanted the adoration of Saul- They wanted to be a part of his plan and his power to destroy David– No love for Truth
  8. Proverbs 16:28 A perverse man sows strife, And a whisperer separates the best of friends.
  9. This spirit is so prevalent in the world and church today- people love to create problems
  10. Two- A Ziphite is selfish at the expense of others Selfishness is the heart of the ziphite- Turning on others for their own benefit-  24 So they arose and went to Ziph before Saul.-
  11. No care who was hurt- self serving- David is our tribe- but we have much to GAIN from turning
  12. Ninth Commandment- Exodus 20:16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
  13. Three- A ziphite Cares nothing about God or his plans
  14. Even tho the ziphites were of Judah- they were not of YHWH- Who turns on David? What had David done? No seeking after God- to see what the heart of God was for the matter-
  15. What does it mean to you?
  16. Do you have a heart of Ziphite? Do you sow discord and betray your own tribe? Self serving?
  17. READ Proverbs 6:16-19 And sows discord among the brethren
  18. This is a very subtle approach of the Devil to split relationships and churches and families
  19. Personally frustrated people either fix their issues or use hatred of others as a diversion to their problems- its easier to destroy others than face the realities of your brokenness
  20. They unify in their disdain for others, form alliances to hide from their sinful heart
  21. If that’s your heart- you need to change- you’re hurting yourself, others and God’s people
  22. Romans 16:17 Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them.
  23. These are the people described in  Romans 2:8 but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness—indignation and wrath,
  24. Heart check time- Am I unifier or divider? Do I love and gather or do I hate and disperse? What do I talk about and whom do I talk about? Talk about yourself! Talk about Your Sins!
  25. I get it- Families raised this way- hard to break- Infighting, despair, alliances- Not in Church!
  26. It’s the spirit of the Ziphite? Why destroy your own tribe? Defend them! (Man with wife in door)
Three Hearts
  • The heart of Saul
  • As if the heart of the Ziphite was enough- the heart of Saul was even WORSE than the Ziphites- The Ziphites are the antagonist in this story- against David- But SAUL says they are of GOD
  • 1 Sam 23:21 And Saul said, “Blessed are you of the Lord, for you have compassion on me. 22 Please go and find out for sure, and see the place where his hideout is, and who has seen him there. For I am told he is very crafty.
  • WHAT? How do you go from King of Israel to now looking at others sins and saying “you are blessed of God”- What level of spiritual depravity would you be at to now be praising evil?
  • Wouldn’t it be interesting if we lived in a time where Kings celebrated pride of Sin in streets?
  • Isaiah 5:20  Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; Who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
  • This is not of God! The people of God- even more a King should NEVER celebrate EVIL EVER-
  • Pro 17:15 He who justifies the wicked, and he who condemns the just, Both of them alike are an abomination to the Lord.
  • This is EXACTLY what Saul is doing- Justifying the wicked (Ziphites) condemn just (David)
  • Now- He’s an abomination! What is that? Hatred- God now has hatred before them
  • This is why it perplexes me when people say God is love- he is but he HATES SIN- HATES IT
  • Malachi 2:17  You have wearied the Lord with your words; READ
  • People who celebrate sin WEARY the LORD- They take advantage of his grace and mercy
  • People say I talk about Sin too much- why? From the scriptures- its clear God doesn’t like it
  • How dare they celebrate sexual immorality in all forms, murder of unborn, evil actions, etc
  • Job 17:12 They change the night into day; ‘The light is near,’ they say, in the face of darkness
  • What kind of world are we living in? Literally changing night to day- bizzaro world.
  • People wonder why I talk this- I want new people to know who we are- we will not bend!
  • Do you know who gets tired of hearing about sin? Sinners. Submission? Rebellious. Loving? Unloving. Forgiveness? Grudge holders. Generosity? Stingy. Growing churches must address
Three Hearts
  • What does it mean to you?
  • Do you celebrate sin? Do you call it blessed when others come to you in Sin? (divorce parties)
  • Do you jump on the gossip train and join in the discord? Do you see sin and accept it?
  • 2 Timothy 3:1-5 READ
  • Lk 16:15 He said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.
  • What do you esteem? What do you defend in your heart and action? Allow in your life?
  • Do you see sin and celebrate it as blessed? Or do you mourn? Sin is sin!
  • People that full-on celebrate it- “You are blessed” just like Saul? WHAT? Not me.
  • 1 cor 5:1-3 PUFFED UP- They were pleased! Celebrating the sexual sin!
  • People want to rail on the alphabet people when there is fornication etc in the church
  • Fornication is no different. Greed. Gossip. Unforgiveness. All of it. ITS EVERYWHERE
  • Malachi 3:15 So now we call the proud blessed, For those who do wickedness are raised up; They even tempt God and go free.’ ”
  • Sexual sin is easy to talk about but God hates it all- 1 Corinthians 6:8-10 READ
  • Any of those sting? Anything you need to work on? Don’t celebrate it! HATE IT
  • Christians don’t live sinless- they identify it and overcome it- they do something about it
  • You must realize your sins, repent of them- and choose to live differently- Honor God w life.
Three Hearts
  • The heart of David-
  • You know- You wonder what was going on in David being on the Run- What did he do?
  • Psalm 54-  READ when the Ziphites went and said to Saul, “Is David not hiding with us?”
  • This is the heart of David- He’s running for his life-under attack and he writes a worship song
  • Not complaining- Not biting back- Not amassing a plan to attack- just gonna write a worship song
  • One dependence on God– Read V 1-2
  • David knew that only God could save him- and Vindicate him- Take care of his issues-
  • The heart of the Ziphite and Saul is counter productive to this- Self vindication to God vindicating
  • Two- Understanding of adversaries- READ V3
  • David sees that if the Ziphites are going to give him up- they are not his brothers. Strangers
  • What made them oppressors and strangers? “they have not set God before them”
  • 1 Cor 5:11 But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother,
  • When you start acting unbrotherly- You forfeit that title and position- esp if you are attacking
  • Three- Trust in protection–  4 Behold, God is my helper; The Lord is with those who uphold my life. 5 He will repay my enemies for their evil. Cut them off in Your truth.
  • David knew the only way out of his predicament was to fully trust God- no other way
  • The truth of who God is will cut them off and they will be repaid- david had to do nothing
  • So what does David do? Praise God- V6-7 That’s his heart- PRAISE
  • You will deliver me- you will take care of me- you will watch over me. I will praise you
  • That’s the heart of David- a Heart of Praise
Three Hearts
  • What does it mean to you?
  • Which heart- Ziphite of Attack? Saul of Sin? Or David heart of Praise- praise through circumstance
  • One- We should be praising God through our circumstance- no matter what it is
  • Col 3: 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
  • We should be trusting him at all times- Praise builds trust- that God will work it out
  • People trying to kill me, celebrating my adversaries, coming after me- I’m gonna praise
  • Psalm 62:8 Trust in Him at all times, you people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah
  • Praise Songs aren’t scripture- but good ones are written from them and remind you of truth
  • Ps 86:12 I will praise You, O Lord my God, with all my heart,And I will glorify Your name forevermore.
  • Two- We should be trusting that God will vindicate us- Praise him in the storm- come to church
  • When you are in the thick of a relational struggle- you have to trust that God is watching and that God is going to make it right
  • Exodus 14:14 The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold  your peace.”
  • I know who’s I am and who I am- I do not need to defend myself, or get into an argument with someone
  • God is watching- and he is going to take care of that person- he will. Praise him instead of fight
  • Romans 12:19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.
  • God’s wrath is better than your defense. Give the Lord time to take care of the details-
  • David will be avenged- He will be taken care of – he need not worry- you don’t either- Praise God-trust him. READ V 24-29
