I TOLD YOU SO. Don’t you just hate those words! I’ve heard those words far too many times in my life and they ring in infamy of the many times I could have and should have avoided, especially in my younger years. Most young people lack wisdom and discernment and without these, the young make foolish mistakes. Yet some of you are not any different.

Elisha just witnessed Elijah be taken up into heaven and received Elijah’s mantle in order to carry on his ministry. There was a group of prophets nearby who saw Elisha, recognized he had Elijah’s mantle and spoke to him, “Let us go and seek for Elijah”. Elisha, knowing that Elijah was in heaven and would not return, tells the men, “don’t go”. They go. They search for 3 days and don’t find him. “When they returned to Elisha, who had waited at Jericho, he said to them,

Did I not tell you, Do not go?” 2 Kings‬ ‭2:18‬

‭I love stories like these recorded in Scripture illustrating human nature. Some of us have to find out things for ourselves and if we’re honest, it’s the hard way. These men were probably just curious or maybe said in their hearts, “Crazy old Elisha!” But they still wasted three days looking for someone who was really gone. Did they think Elisha was lying? They probably would not outright say that, but on some level they did not believe him. They had to find out for themselves.

I’m going out on a limb, but most of the time we are the same and operate under a spirit of rebellious pride. I can’t believe you, I have to find it out, see it, touch it for myself. Those of us who have experienced life on the other side of the fence know it’s not greener. It’s a false representation. Why do you have to straddle the fence? Hello? It’s rebellion and rebellion is lawlessness.

Did someone not tell you, “don’t go”? Your parents told you, “don’t hang out with those kids or you’ll end up in trouble”. But you had to find out the hard way. Told you so. Why would you not listen to someone who actually knows and has experience in that circumstance? Hard-headed stubbornness will destroy you. Don’t be like the mule! Just obey. Be teachable, it could save years of your life.

“And you groan and mourn when your end comes, when your flesh and body are consumed, And you say, How I hated instruction and discipline, and my heart despised reproof! I have not obeyed the voice of my teachers nor submitted and consented to those who instructed me.” Proverbs‬ ‭5:11-13
