I Will Ask You One Thing

  • I also will ask you one thing, Matthew 21:23-32
  • Last week Ps Jeremy talked about Jesus and the fig tree- listen to it- Really good- and one of the things that he brought up was the authority of Jesus- This is one of the problems that people had with Jesus during that time- they questioned his authority because he said and did things that people shouldn’t have authority to do. He spoke as if he was equal with God-
  • When they ask him these things its because he just got done flipping tables, healing the sick, calling out these guys and their position in the Temple. They are somewhat miffed about it
  • So Jesus, in good Jesus fashion- throws a question back to their question- Specifically the baptism of John- from God or men? (He’s putting them in an interesting position)
  • They said- v25 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ 26 But if we say, ‘From men,’ we fear the multitude, for all count John as a prophet.” 27 So they answered Jesus and said, “We do not know.”
  • It was a conundrum that Jesus proposed to them to put them in their spiritual place- to tell them- if you’re not going to be accepting of me as messiah- shut your yap. I’m not going to tell you – and if you answer John is a prophet- you have to accept that I am from God
  • V27 And He said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.
  • So he follows up with them by sharing a parable- READ v 28-32
  • The explanation of the parable is quite simple- Who is the better son? The one that did what his father wanted or the one who did not? Obviously the one who did what his father wanted- Go to the vineyard
  • The lesson for us today is the lesson we talk about every week- Obedience to the father.
  • Jesus juxtaposes two types of people to these pharisees to drive the point home- The vilest sinners could see the truth- but you religious people cant see the truth- I am messiah. Also- one was obedient and one was obedient- Which one will go to heaven? The obedient one.
  • The first son was told to go and work in the vineyard- his heart wasn’t in it- so he said he wouldn’t, but he regretted it- so he did what was asked- He was obedient to the Father
  • The second son- lied- said he would go and didn’t go- They agreed that the first son did the right thing- because he did what the father wanted go to the vineyard and work.
  • And the tax collectors and harlots are elevated above the chief priests because they didn’t accept what they accepted- the baptism of John and that Jesus came from Heaven.
  • They accepted Jesus as coming from heaven and saw him as messiah.
  • It’s a pretty simple message on Authority- and it should immediately cause anyone who hears it to submit to the Authority of Christ- Why? He’s God. People say they want to see God and want to know what God thinks and says and what he would do- Look at Jesus. He is the Authority. We need to do what he says and follow him. He is God in the flesh.
  • Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
  • We all should know about Christ’s authority- but we still don’t submit to it in all our lives
  • The questions that Jesus asks us, reveals what we know about him, and what level of authority we allow him to have in our lives- Answer these questions- find where you’re at with authority
  • One man identified over 130 questions Jesus asked in the Gospels. From the simple- “what is your name” to the profound “Who do you say I am” – Jesus- I will ask you one thing
  • we wont be covering all 130 today, but in the same fashion that Jesus came back at these priests, I’d like to ask a few questions of ourselves today to reveal his authority. Answer these questions- find his authority. These may not all be for you- but I will ask you one thing
  • I will ask you one thing-Do you love Jesus?  Jesus said– “Do you love me”
  • This question was asked of Simon Peter- but I think it’s a question that Jesus would ask us as well- because if you love someone- it changes the relationship- it changes the dynamic
  • A relationship that is grounded in love will always be a better relationship than one that is based on fear, coercion, intimidation, or duty. It just is. God is love, and Biblical love is great
  • Do you love me? Why is this so important? Met many who claim Christ- few who love Jesus Love flourishes in a much different way. It’s a great motivator if you actually love.
  • God loves us- that is undeniable. Its all throughout scripture- Love is central to Christianity
  • John 16:27 for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and have believed that I came forth from God.
  • John 3:16 For God so loved the world. 1 John 3:1 Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!
  • Love is central to the expression of God and central to his being. He is love and he loves us!
  • Some of you try to understand God’s love based on earthly love, but its just not possible to comprehend it in that way- the creative force of God in creating you and sustaining you, and then dying on a cross to save you is unlike any other love you could ever experience. Ever.
  • No human relationship, experience, anecdote or story can explain it- it just can’t
  • Story of Chad Arnold- Brother Ryan gave him living liver transplant- 2010
  • Breathe- in and out- you’re alive- and its great to be alive- that’s because of GOD loving US
  • natural response to this love? Love TO God 1 Jn 4:19 We love Him because He first loved us.
  • When Jesus asks- Do you love me? It’s not some romantic type love- deep agape love- that if you love him- you submit to his authority- you do what he says because you trust him.
  • You must reflect on his love- what he has done for you- it builds trust for his authority
  • 2 Corinthians 5:14-15 For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; 15 and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.
  • When Jesus tells me to give up my life and follow him- I trust and love him-he’s proven faithful.
  • And so when he says things like-
  • Matthew 10:37 He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.
  • I submit to it- I say “ok Jesus- you know better than I do” he wants first place in my heart- he’s going to get first place in my heart. I’m going to love him. I love him.
  • So if Jesus is asking you today- “do you love me” it can be show in your submission to him- if you follow what he says and trust what he does- you submit to his will and his ways
  • Typically a heart that doesn’t love Jesus, cant submit to Jesus- because there is no trust
  • Learn to love Jesus and you’ll learn to trust Jesus- and his authority will have more influence
  • And if I don’t love him, I want to learn to love him- to appreciate him and KNOW him.
  • Matthew 7:21-23– Away from me- I never knew you- I don’t want to hear that!

Other Questions That are of cosmic importance (still not 135 of them)

  • Why are you so afraid? (Matthew 8:26) YOU DON’T NEED TO BE
  • Too many of us live in fear- about today and tomorrow- When Jesus asks these types of questions- its always to declare- You need not be afraid! Trust in him
  • Do you believe that I am able to do this? (Matthew 9:28) YES HE IS ABLE>
  • You cease from being afraid when you believe that Jesus can do whatever he says he can do- He can forgive, provide, sustain, inspire, protect, heal, set free, renew and change!
  • Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? (Luke 6:46) WHY?
  • The sad reality of lukewarm do nothing pretending Christianity is a scourge to God
  • He doesn’t want lip service- he want committed followers who will follow!
  • And when you follow you gain an eternal inheritance for your soul!
  • What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? (Matthew 16:26)
  • How will you escape being condemned to hell? (Matthew 23:33)
  • Believing that he forgives, following his commandments, not living in your sins,
  • Not loving the world- or the things in this world- if you love the world, love of father not in
  • What is that to you? (John 21:22) What God is doing in someone else is NONE of your BIZ
  • Too many people overly convinced with what God is doing in someone else-
  • Their money- Their job, their spouse- their walk- gosspping back biting jealous and envious
  • Be concerned with You and you alone. Where are YOU at- Not where someone ELSE is

Question two- Do you still not understand? (Mark 8:21)

  • Much of what Jesus was attempting to do was get people to understand what he was doing and why he was doing it- to let people know who God was and what he wants from us.
  • When Jesus asked his disciples this question “do you still not understand” he had just finished talking to him about his two miracles of loaves and fishes and they still couldn’t understand
  • They couldn’t understand why he did it or what it meant even tho they were walking with JC
  • Why? Because they weren’t paying attention to what Jesus was doing and what he was able to do- They didn’t know the word- or at least they weren’t remembering it.
  • He had said- “If you do not believe Moses’ writings how will you believe me?” John 5:47
  • You would think that people who had seen Jesus perform miracles, wouldn’t care much about what went on around them- but these guys apparently still did- They didn’t get it
  • In that instance he was challenging them against hypocrisy of the pharisees and using the numerals of 7 and 12 to denote about God’s completeness and plan of the 12 tribes of Israel and the 12 disciples. But they couldn’t grasp it- Mark 7:18 “ Are you still so Dull?” (unintelligent)
  • The specific point he was making isn’t the application part- it’s the application directly to you-
  • Why do you still not understand what God is doing?
  • Have you never read in the Scriptures? (Matthew 21:42)
  • If you feel as though you are spiritually ignorant, and not growing, its because of you.
  • It’s because you’re lazy and aren’t will to teach yourself some of God’s word
  • He5:12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food.
  • The Bible is not that complex (although it’s the most complex book in the world)
  • According to christianbook.com KJV 12 RSV 12 NRSV 11 NASB 11 ESV 10 NIV 7-8 NKJV  7 NLT 6 Message 4-5 NIrV  3. I’m guessing that everyone in here has at least a 3rd grade reading level.
  • Am I trying to make you feel dumb? No. I’m taking away your excuses and laying it before you
  • I wasn’t a parent that blamed teachers and coaches. I blamed my kids.
  • Really- Its this idea that I’m powerless to change anything about my circumstances- NO
  • Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.
  • Since that is true- why aren’t you devouring God’s word? Probably laziness.
  • You will binge watch a show- but you wont binge read the bible.
  • In less than 90 days you can read the whole bible only reading probably an hour a month.
  • Most estimates are 54-72 hours to read it. That’s just the first time. If you’re not reading it through every year- you should-
  • Matthew 21:42 Have you never read in the Scriptures?
  • This is why people have bad doctrine and bad doctrine produces a bad life.
  • When you know what the word says- everything else falls into place in your life. It is CENTRAL
  • to your faith- Its more important that anything else- worshipping, serving, fellowship, giving, etc
  • Because if its not rooted in the WORD its not sustainable-
  • Psalm 119:16 I will delight myself in Your statutes; I will not forget Your word.
  • You cannot delight in what you don’t know and remember what you never read.
  • Dinner- Ordered impossible- Crystal stopped- because she KNOWS me- my desires!
  • When you get God’s word inside of you- you are equipped for many things
  • You don’t want to sin? Read the word
  • Psalm 119:11 Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You.
  • You want to get back on track after you’ve gone astray? Read the word.

Jesus- I will ask you one thing- And that’s the thing that reveals your heart and his authority
