- 2 Sam 12: In last weeks sermon, we see david being rebuked by Nathan and his repentant attitude
- He admitted his sins with no qualifiers or demands. He simply repents (turns from sin- admits)
- In our human relationships, often times people ask someone else for forgiveness, but they don’t experience the restoration of the relationship- Repentance with God always equal the reestablishment of the relationship. We repent- God forgives- That’s how it works.
- What we see immediately after this is what happens in his life- Great things.
- A few things we want grab out of this story this morning- 3 things that repentance brings
- Repentance brings mercy
- We serve a God of mercy- he desires to show mercy- he loves to show mercy. Its in his nature to do so. HE is loving caring, merciful God- time and time again in the OT we see his mercy.
- Isaiah 55:6-7 Seek the Lord while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near. 7 Let the [a]wicked forsake his way, And the unrighteous man his thoughts; Let him return to the Lord, And He will have mercy on him; And to our God, For He will abundantly pardon.
- God abundantly pardons sin- He doesn’t hold grudges or offenses. He forgives the repentant
- This is see in the beginning of our verse this am-
- 12:24 Then David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went in to her and lay with her. So she bore a son, and he called his name Solomon. Now the Lord loved him,
- The lord LOVED him. Last part of scripture David suffered deeply for his sin. Son was killed, he was rebuked, told he caused others to blaspheme God. Just punishment for his sin
- But NOW- God isn’t holding it against him because he REPENTED- God isn’t like “well, the past”
- No- “The Lord loved him” God loved Solomon, the son of David- Because of his MERCY
- Those of you who are at home today- I’m sure you’ve had the experience of having something bad happen to you- Someone did you wrong, and you spent far too much time in your mind planning their demise in your mind. OR- you hold a grudge- you wont move past it
- You feel justified in your anger and frustration and hold onto it like a warm blanket
- You understand that about yourself- but you need to not put that on God- he aint like that.
- 2 Chronicles 7:14 if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
- That’s the nature and character of God- he forgives sin. He restores relationship
- Proverbs 28:13 He who covers his sins will not prosper, But whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.
- What does it mean to you?
- Are holding yourself in a grudge that God is not holding you to? Have you repented and walked away from your sins? Jesus forgives you and LOVES you- He isn’t holding anything against you
- As much as God forgave David and loved Solomon- he love you as well.
- Since God has forgive you, maybe its about time you forgave yourself and moved on?
- James 4:9-10 Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.
- God desires to forgive you and show you mercy and when you REPENT it brings MERCY.
- Ezekiel 33:11 READ
- Ezekiel 18:27-30 READ “its not fair”
- Yeah man- favor aint fair! There’s many of us in the church that don’t deserve what we have and didn’t get half of what we deserved but that’s the nature of OUR GOD
- Sales job- best territory- best sales. Best promotion- Over guys who had been there longer
- I didn’t DESERVE IT- But favor aint fair-
- Repentance brings victory
- This is an interesting part of the story- if you remember back in 2 sam 10- the Israelites went to war with the ammonites and the Syrians. They beat the Syrians, but didn’t destroy the ammonites- They were unable to be fully victorious until after david dealt with his sin
- NOW- after repentance- Victory- He was able to be victorious over the ammonites.
- 12:26 Now Joab fought against Rabbah of the people of Ammon, and took the royal city.
- God wants to bring victory- but he can’t bless disobedience. His grace may allow a measure of victory- but full victory cannot happen in the fullness of disobedient sin- it just cant.
- So when you REPENT- VICTORY FOLLOWS- “took the royal city”
- De 20:4 for the Lord your God is He who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.’
- This is a HUGE theme in the OT- Faithful to God- win battles- Unfaithful- lose battles
- Psalm 108:13 Through God we will do valiantly, For it is He who shall tread down our enemies.
- Constant cycle in the life of the Israelites- faithfulness brings fruitfulness. Disobedience doesnt
- Haggai 2:4 Yet now be strong, Zerubbabel,’ says the Lord; ‘and be strong, Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest; and be strong, all you people of the land,’ says the Lord, ‘and work; for I am with you,’ says the Lord of hosts.
- What does it mean to you
- What areas of disobedience do you have in your life that you think are holding you back from victory? I said that there was something that you know the lord has asked you to start doing or stop doing that you haven’t been obedient to
- 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward [a]us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
- He’s patient- and he’s been patient- he wants great things for your life- but REPENT
- Its THROUGH JESUS that we get this victory- we can PRAISE GOD FOR IT>
- 1 Cor 15:57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
- Its VICTORY over SIN, SELF, PAIN, LONELINESS, TRAUMA, SUFFERING, all manner of brokenness.
- Psalm 118:5-17 READ
- God wants you to have victory over SIN and over this WORLD- To walk in the VICTORY he provides Romans 16:20
- 3. Repentance brings abundance
- We serve a blessing God- A God that relishes the opportunity to bless his children. But again, He cannot and will not bless disobedience
- We see after repentance- mercy and forgiveness we see victory AND we see ABUNDANCE
- 30 Then he took their king’s crown from his head. Its weight was a talent of gold, with precious stones. And it was set on David’s head. Also he brought out the spoil of the city in great abundance.
- Immediately following David’s repentance and victory- God brought abundance into his life
- In this instance is was Gold- and I don’t want to stretch this verse into saying that you will get gold if you repent, but in the economy of the time- getting gold was a sign of blessing
- It showed other nations that you were blessed and that you had power- in ancient Israel- Gold was a sign of blessing- Lets not take it to that degree- but lets agree that blessings follow repent
- God promised blessings in Deuteronomy 28:1-14
- How can that not say what its not saying? Can we take scripture at its word?
- Again- because people have perverted it into a forcing God to do something doctrine- I’m not saying that- I’m simply saying- Repent and you will walk in abundance- whatever that looks like
- Psalm 36:8-9 They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Your house, And You give them drink from the river of Your pleasures. 9 For with You is the fountain of life; In Your light we see light.
- Abundance may just mean a car that runs and bills that are paid
- Our whole life, I’ve never made a ton of money- but we’ve always been taken care of.
- Psalm 37:25 I have been young, and now am old; Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken,
- Nor his descendants begging bread.
- What does it mean to you
- If you’re lacking peace and contentment it may be because you haven’t repented and if you do, you will experience the abundance of the Lord in every area of your life
- Depression, anxiety, shame, guilt, relationships, jobs, all of that.
- Ephesians 3:20 Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,
- It frustrates me I have to keep clarifying this, but its more than just physical- its spiritual and emotional- its everything. I think that being a fully submitted follower of God produces blessing
- 2 Corinthians 9:8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work.
- John 10:10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
- Psalm 65:11 You crown the year with Your goodness, And Your paths drip with abundance.
- Matthew 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
- Don’t ask for it. Don’t demand it. Don’t twist scriptures to think you’re going to get God to do something for you- Just repent and watch what the lord may do
- It may take time, it may not look like you want it to look or what you think it will look like, but it will happen- It may just be- you have more toilet paper than you need- but that is ABUNDANCE
- 1999- God Give me a new suburban (bad theology- walked away from it)
- 2009- Driving a 2003- Newer and paid for- blessings- Trust God-
