And you have praised the gods of silver and gold, bronze and iron, wood and stone, which do not see or hear or know; and the God who holds your breath in His hand and owns all your ways, you have not glorified.
Daniel 5:23
The other day as my wife and I shopped for essentials we were running low on, it was chaotic. Shelves were emptied and we were unable to find what we needed. So I prayed quietly and said “Lord, I trust You. I trust You to provide even the smallest things”. Within 10 minutes I had received two phone calls from two separate people offering to help us with the items we lacked, items that no store around had in stock.
Our faith, our comfort, and our security is not found in the things of this world, but the One who controls it all. When things seem chaotic, we know that the Lord is sovereign and has not stepped down from His throne. He is faithful to provide, but it wasn’t until AFTER we showed Him that we trusted Him that we saw His provision. Where have you placed your faith? Where are you looking for comfort and security?
King Belshazzar gave praises to false gods of wood, metal, and stone, but it was the Lord that held his breath, the Lord who determined his steps and his way. It pleases men to place their trust in those things which we can control, false idols that do what we desire them to do. We ignore the One that holds the power of life, the One who controls and rules over all, and instead place trust in those things WE control. It’s clear who those people are today, as they panic and stockpile out of fear and worry. Yet those who trust in God are at peace, those who rely on the Lord for everything are unmoved by the chaos because they have surrendered all to Him. You can have peace, or you can have control, but you cannot have both.
