VANITY

Vanity

VANITY OF VANITIES; ALL IS VANITY. It might surprise you that the word “vanity” in the Hebrew language doesn’t have the same meaning as it does for us in English. By definition, “vanity” is something transitory and unsatisfactory; emptiness. But here’s where it gets interesting. The primary root word of “vanity” means, “to be vain in act, word, or expectation; TO LEAD ASTRAY.” Therefore, any vain or “empty” action, word or thought has the ability to lead one astray.
“The Lord knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity (empty and with the ability to lead astray).” Psalms‬ ‭94:11‬ ‭Every futile and unexamined thought has the ability to become an action, whether in word or in deed. Every vain thought of seeking pleasure, happiness, life, peace, wholeness, freedom (and the list goes on) OUTSIDE of the presence and purposes of God; is vanity. It’s not only empty, but also has the ability to lead you astray. King Solomon wrote a whole book on this very subject, of seeking anything to please your flesh outside the constraints of His Word and His will. Perhaps you’ve heard of it? It’s called Ecclesiastes. You should read and study it. “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man”. A RIGHT relationship to God and His Word is the ONLY true, good and lasting life.
