Wheat or Weeds

  • The Parable of the Wheat and the Tares  Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43
  • With the explanation of Jesus- the simple understanding of this parable is quite simple-
  • Seed sower– Jesus, Field– World, Wheat is good sons of the kingdom Tares are Sons of the wicked one, The Devil sowed the tares
  • Good seed Goes to Heaven-Tares get put in the furnace of fire
  • Now some people have said that this represents the church but it doesn’t- Jesus himself says “represents the world” he didn’t say church- Plus- Matt 18 shows how to deal with sinners in a church- you remove them- you don’t let them grow together. Plus- many other scriptures
  • This isn’t a message about looking for tares among us- its about looking at your own wheat
  • Everyone knows what wheat is- it’s a grain used for food- Tares are the wheat weeds that grow up with it- early stages it looks like wheat- but its not. When its full grown- you know what it is
  • They didn’t’ have roundup back then- Jesus uses an agricultural example- separate at the end of harvest. Keep the wheat, burn the weeds.
  • How do we apply this to our lives
  1. Make sure you’re wheat and not a tare
  • Now- if we know that wheat goes to heaven and weeds go to hell, we’d all want to be wheat
  • I don’t want to minimize this scripture, but I will say- I am glad that weeds are going to hell.
  • Wheat- 43 Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!
  • We want to be wheat. We want to be bread. Carbs. Good healthy crop that can be harvested.
  • We’ve talked about fruit a lot here and over the past few weeks. We want that.
  • We talk a lot about self-examination here- and some would argue that we don’t preach assurance of salvation- but we do- we can rest in the assurance of Jesus and our salvation
  • But if you’re here today and you’re NOT a Christian- you should be looking at your heart- if you ARE a Christian, you should be examining yourself to continually move towards sanctification
  • Psalm 139:23-24 Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; 24 And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting.
  • And that’s a great verse to start with- My wife had an amazing word couple wed. ago and she asked- how much cancer is an acceptable amount? How much dung you want in your water?
  • The church has 3 ordinances that belong to us, marriage, baptisms, communion. During communion we know1 Corinthians 11:28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. And that’s a continual process of our faith-
  • God wants us to live in reflection- he wants us to look at our hearts continually- every comm.
  • 2 Corinthians 13:5 Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you are disqualified.
  • And its not out of fear, but of reverence- I still ask my wife “are you ok, what can I do for you?”
  • Lamentations 3:40 Let us search out and examine our ways, And turn back to the Lord;
  • 1 Corinthians 9:27READ
  • Whats the litmus test for wheat? How do we know we’re there?
  • Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
  • Tares- 41 The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who practice lawlessness, 42 and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
  • Tares- the fake wheat that grows among the wheat- we do not want to be that-
  • So if you’re sitting here- wondering- am I wheat or weed?
  • Are you a slave to lawlessness?
  • Romans 6:19 READ
  • Who runs your life, your desires or Jesus? We all have desires that are contrary to the Bible
  • My evil desires come up in my mind all the time, I just take them captive- I don’t want them to rule me- (donuts, pancakes, oreos no longer rule me- I know I control them- used to not)
  • Be a slave to righteousness! Don’t be a slave to your desires- fight them!
  • Don’t fellowship with lawlessness 2 Corinthians 6:14 READ
  • Who do you spend the bulk of your time with? Weeds or wheat? Wheat chokes out weed
  • Weeds love each other- they always multiply- I have been fighting these weeds in my yard
  • Love righteousness Hebrews 1:9 You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.”
  • Man- you got to love what God loves and hate what God hates- you should be in love with love, forgiveness, peace, patience, kindness, don’t be quarrelsome!
  • Gal 5:19-21 Works of the flesh-
  1. Realize that this world is temporary
  • 30 Let both grow together until the harvest, and at the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, “First gather together the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn.” ’ ”
  • I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again- this season should be getting you to realize the temporary nature of this place we call home- and I’ll say this- even if you move away from here that’s still not your home. You will never find a resting place on this earth if you really love Jesus-
  • I said from the pulpit a while back- God has called me here for this time to battle- I am not leaving- but even if I did- that wouldn’t be my home either. Suicide rate in HI same as WA 2010
  • John 16:33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
  • I got pastor friends in Ca, Tx, NM, Fl, Tn, NJ, Ia, its all the same complaints. The problem isn’t your state- the problem is that we lived in a fallen world that is filled with sin.
  • But if you don’t have this mindshift- you are going to be forever in bondage to this idea that “only if” then you would be happy- its just not the case. You have to learn to have joy right now
  • 1 John 2:16-17 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.
  • Its all gonna burn man- It just is. Nothing lasts forever.
  • First big screen tv- so excited to get it- I think we ended up taking it to the dump
  • 2 Corinthians 4:18 while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.
  • They only thing eternal is Heaven and the souls that go there with us! There’s nothing else!
  • 2 Corinthians 5:7 For we walk by faith, not by sight.
  • Faith is- My job is not my provider. Faith is I’m not going to get worked up over the news Faith is I’m going to serve God whole heartedly. Faith is I’m getting my kids to heaven not sports
  • Sight is- I need to work as hard as I can to gather as much stuff as I can so I can have value in this life- I am worried about food, healthcare, and retirement. nope. DOesn’t work.
  • Hebrews 11:13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
  • Have you confessed that? That you’re a stranger and pilgrim on this earth? Just passing through? Or do you have this mindset of accumulating all you can right now?
  • College- so much hijinx- but we knew when we were there we weren’t going to raise our families there- we weren’t going to have kids there- it was just a moment in time
  • And I get it- life brings a certain amount of joy with it- Some great things- But temporary
  • Isaiah 51:6 READ The earth will grow old like a garment,
  • Garments fade- things die- people die. Nothing is forever on this earth. Nothing.
  • NFL hall of fame- bust that is going to last 30k years. Huh? Bro- its gonna burn.
  • 1 Corinthians 7:31 says For the form of this world is passing away.
  • And let me say this- this doesn’t mean we don’t take care of business, or it doesn’t mean that we don’t participate in trying to make the world a better place, we don’t rape and pillage the environment. I’d like to have clean water while I’m waiting for Jesus to return.
  • But the early church lived with a daily expectation of Christs return and that’s what comforted them- it wasn’t to fix the earth or have better stuff or stop being a Christian
  • Maybe if we had some crucifixtions we would have more hope. Maybe this isn’t bad enough
  • 1 Peter 4:7 But the end of all things is at hand; therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers.
  • Here’s a truth- James 4:14 whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.
  • Stop putting your hope in this world. Its systems, its ways and its problems. Its not your home.
  1. Look forward to heaven
  • 39 The enemy who sowed them is the devil, the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are the angels. 40 Therefore as the tares are gathered and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of this age.43 Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!
  • I do not want to go to Hell- let me reiterate that- but I’m not running from Hell- I’m looking forward to heaven. I want to go there- I want to be there- I want to do what Heaven is doing
  • Now- The absolute details are not expressly clear- but here’s what is clear- Jesus is there. Evil is not. Therefore- that’s where I want to spend eternity.
  • Romans 8:24-25 For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance.
  • DO you have that hope? Are you hoping  in heaven or are you hoping for heaven on earth?
  • This is one of the most perplexing problems with modern thought- Marxism and communism attempt to create a utopia where they feel as tho a government can achieve unified happiness for all mankind. No hurt, death, sin, or pain. Legislate away sin and change hearts
  • Pastor in meeting over gun violence- After guns are gone, how do we change their hearts?
  • But that’s NEVER going to happen on this side of heaven NEVER. It just continues.
  • We look to the sky! Philippians 3:20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,
  • If My citizenship is in heaven- I need to go home- I need to be where my savior is.
  • Hebrews 13:14 For here we have no continuing city, but we seek the one to come.
  • Colossians 3:1-3 If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
  • That’s what we’re supposed to do- seeking those things that are above
  • Do you actually believe in Heaven? Do you reflect on it and what it will be like?
  • Or are you just too focused on what good you can get from God here- its good- but no.
  • 2 Peter 3:13-14 Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.14 Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless;
  • 2 Cor 4:17-5:8 READ
  • I have pain in this life. Emotional, physical, mental, situational. My life is painful. You don’t hear me complain about it- but its there- deep scars that Jesus has healed me from
  • And much of it isn’t going to be fixed on this side of heaven. It just aint- SO I want THIS_
  • Revelation 21:4 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”
  • Give me that life! Give me that heaven life!
  • Friend- Jesus is preparing a place for you in heaven-John 14:2 In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
  • 1 Corinthians 2:9 But as it is written:“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,Nor have entered into the heart of manThe things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”
  • So fall in love with Jesus- live wholly for him get prepared for heaven-
  • This is why discipleship is so important- we’re being prepared for heaven-
  • You get a new body- but you don’t get a new soul- you’re still going to be you
  • But God is going to get you there with your faith in HIM-
  • WHEAT- Not WEEDS. Sowed by Jesus- reaped by him- bound for glory. “I’ve got a home in glory land that outshines the sun)
  • Hebrews 11:16 But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.
  • Give your life to Jesus
