Welcome the King 2 sam 19:8-19
- People are arguing about David v Absalom. David was good, but Absalom was good too they say. David talks to his priests and ask them to talk to the elders and ask- why aren’t you supporting me? Remind Amasa that we’re family. David gets into their hearts- and they say “Return” So he returns. Judah comes to escort, 1000 men from Benjamin, David comes across the Jordan into Jerusalem.
- The king was gone- but now he’s been welcomed back.
- Like many OT stories and scriptures, you can gain a lot from looking at these stories Christologically- That is- to see the stories of Christ in them and to apply them to your life
- The people of Israel knew David was their king, but they were the ones who installed Absalom and followed him instead of David and pushed David out. They chose their own king-Not David
- Much like many people today.. Jesus is the rightful king in their lives, but they choose their own king- their “Absalom” the one who they think they can manipulate and control- not submit
- Its rebellion- Its literally American politics- I’ll vote this person in so they can do what I want- usually so they don’t have to submit to the Lord- regardless of political party. Self- rule
- Many people can’t receive King Jesus in the same way these couldn’t receive David
1.They were fighting
- 9 Now all the people were in a dispute throughout all the tribes of Israel,
- What were they arguing about? David v Absalom. Who was the better king. Who served us better- AND- should we let David back? He didn’t kill Absalom- He failed us. Do we want him
- This isn’t good- Israel shouldn’t be in this type of discussion or in this type of fight.
- David- Psalm 133:1 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brethren to dwell together in unity! BUT THEY AREN’T DWELLING IN UNITY- They are created STRIFE- DIVISION
- Pr 17:14 The beginning of strife is like releasing water; Therefore stop contention before a quarrel starts.
- I’m always surprised at what the Bible doesn’t say- where’s the guy calling for unity?
- I’ll tell you where- in the back not speaking up for unity- Just joining in.
- Here’s where the fighting came from- and it always comes from- Selfish desires
- James 4:1 Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members?
- Ancient Israel is no different than modern day America- people are deeply selfish
- Israel wanted their king their way- It will be the same heart that will crucify Jesus
- This isn’t what God desired- never desired Absalom to reign- only David but PEOPLE
- What does it mean to you
- Constant fighting will always keep you from experiencing God’s best for you in your life
- Whether its fighting God or others- Strife, quarreling, division, will never bring Peace
- 1 Th 5:9 God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,
- You’re fighting God- God did not create you to be argumentative, divisive and contentious.
- Gal 5:15 But if you bite and devour one another, beware lest you be consumed by one another!
- That’s the end result of fighting- It happened to Israel when Judah split and same for us-
- God doesn’t approve of it- and we need to resist it and keep it from infiltrating our lives.
- When I was in the military- we never had long standing fights- they always got squashed that day- What was truthful was told, you sucked it up and drove on-
- Why? The mission- What you cared about was insignificant- Field- Driving- SSG to SGT
- We don’t do it that way here- but the heart is there- this is a mission for God
- 1 Peter 3:8 Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous;
- It all comes back to selfish desires- you can never get along when you put yourself first and you can never welcome the king if you are consumed with yourself instead of the King-
- Ephesians 4:3 1 Corinthians 1:10 Philippians 2:2
They were longing for false kingdom
- 10 But Absalom, whom we anointed over us, has died in battle. Now therefore, why do you say nothing about bringing back the king?”
- They wanted to kingdom of Absalom- they hadn’t distanced themselves from it in their heart
- To them, there was still a question in their hearts- Should we have followed Abasalom or David?- Loved the rebellion of Absalom- Love getting their own way
- What? Why is this even a question? David is KING- Not Absalom- Not ever. Fake King-
- But this is how hearts are- they long for the unrighteous- look back loving sin
- You can’t bring up the past- past relationships, Jobs, coaches, friends, who likes that?
- New kid- Back at my old school- we did it this way- you’re not at that school- you’re HERE
- Numbers 11:5 We remember the fish which we ate freely in Egypt, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic;
- That’s the heart- I miss my old master the pharaoh that treated me poorly-
- Same as these folks with David- Longing for the days of Absalom when rebellion reigned.
- God’s rule is infinite. He will rule his people. Jesus will have an eternal kingdom
- Daniel 2:44 And in the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever.
- What does it mean to you
- Have you submitted to the Kingdom of Jesus- Is he your ruler? Or do you long for your previous ruler? You want your own life, out in the world, away from his grace and mercy and love?
- John 3:3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
- This is why many people can’t understand, appreciate or submit to Christs- kingdom not Born again- They have agreed with Jesus without receiving him-
- I see it time and time again- people who claim to be Christian until its time to be one
- John 18:36b My kingdom is not from here.”Matt 6:33a But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousnessLuke 17:21b For indeed, the kingdom of God is within you.
- NONE of that can be acquired and accomplished unless you have a born again experience- you don’t get it- Its seems foreign. Because its other worldly. It changes you
- Why you preach this way? Claim Christ, then find out, porn, weed, anger, divorce, NO CHANGE
- Many people assume the KoG is an established visible kingdom- and it is somewhat BUT
- Romans 14:17 for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit 1 Cor 4:20 For the kingdom of God is not in word but in power.
- Some of ya’ll aren’t born again and it shows- Get born again and understand the kingdom and you stop longing for a false king
- I don’t want anything else to rule me- I don’t want anyone else to lead me. I want JESUS and him alone. I don’t want to long for anything but Jesus- I don’t want to look at my past fondly
3. They forgot who they were
- 12 You are my brethren, you are my bone and my flesh. Why then are you the last to bring back the king?’
- Why did David have to remind them who they were and whose they were? These weren’t some outsiders- these were the people of Israel- God’s chosen people. Made in the image of God
- Genesis 1:27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him;
- Israel is God’s chosen people- his treasure- Why would they fight? Why would they turn?
- Dt 14:2 For you are a holy people to the Lord your God, and the Lord has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.
- Did They forget? Did they take on the DNA of Absalom? Of course they are flesh and blood!
- What does it mean to you?
- Have you forgot who you are? Have you forgot who you belong to? That you are flesh and blood?
- 1 Pet2:9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;
- You are a child of the most high king- You are his treasure and you are a part of his body-
- 1 Corinthians 12:27 Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.
- When you start drifting away, following false Gods, follow false Kings- King Jesus reminds you and brings you back and says- You are my flesh and blood! Even when you went and followed false Gods- I welcome you back to me- because You are my body- Repent- and come back.
- Cause here’s the best part- He will receive you
- 15 Then the king returned and came to the Jordan. And Judah came to Gilgal, to go to meet the king, to escort the king across the Jordan.
- King Jesus will never leave you or forsake you- He will not forget you- He loves you
- John 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:
- Today is fathers day- your earthly father may have rejected you but God doesn’t.
- Galatians 3:26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
- Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
- 1 John 3:1 what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!
- Romans 8:17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, i
- Ga 4:7you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.
- Thats the love of the father! That’s the connectedness of the family of God-
- When you start to get pulled in another direction, to a false king- Remind yourself!
- That’s not my king! That’s not my leader! Jesus is my king! Jesus is my leader!
