What Does It Take To Be A Winner

Romans 15:1-6                                                                      What does it take to be a winner?

We then who are strong ought to bear with the scruples (a feeling of doubt or hesitation- Moral) of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, leading to edification. For even Christ did not please Himself, but as it is written, “The reproaches (the expression of disapproval or disappointment) of those who reproached You fell on Me. For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope. Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like-minded toward one another, according to Christ Jesus, that you may with one mind and one mouth glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  1. True examination
  2. The first sentence (If we consider ourselves strong ….) How do you know that you are strong?
  3. If we fail this first test, we are doomed and those that follow us are doomed as well
  4. Consider, weigh yourself…not with the standard of these world… Let Christ search you
  5. I Corinthians 11:28 (Nkjv) – But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup
  6. Psalms 139:23 – 24(Nkjv) Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts, And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting.
  7. Job 13:23 How many are my iniquities and sins? Make me know my transgression and my sin
  8. There is a lot of consideration that is not right, and if we weigh ourselves in the wrong way…we become dangerous to the weak
  9. If we use the man’s standard, we will fall short every time
  10. (Vs1) We then who are strong ought to bear with the scruples (a feeling of doubt or hesitation- Moral) of the weak, and not to please ourselves
  • Then act
  • (Vs.2) The writer continues to say “Let’s use our strength to serve others instead of just doing everything for our own benefits
  • We are generally a selfish people- always trying to out do each other
  • I have fallen victim to this- competing with people even when they don’t know am in competition with them
  • And if you don’t believe me, in Luke 9 – Jesus takes Peter, John and James up the mountain to pray
  • Luke 9:29-30 (Nkjv) As He prayed, the appearance of His face was altered, and His robe became white and glistening. 30 And behold, two men talked with Him, who were Moses and Elijah,
  • What does Peter say “ Luke 9:33 (Esv)  And as the men were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah”—not knowing what he said.
    • Peter is only thinking of himself
    • We get to the top and we become comfortable

    • If they did build a tent, Christ would not have gone to the cross
  • A few verses later – Luke 9:46 (Nkjv) A dispute arose among them as to which of them would be greatest
  • We are all about us. Our society is groomed to support this and though we do it low key in most cases, its still a very strong driving force
  • Songs like “what does it take to be no.1 two is not a winner and 3 nobody remembers (Nelly)
  • There is nothing wrong with competition, health competition, …but we do wrong when we bring it in to the Church
  • You and I didn’t save ourselves, yet we want to take that free gift and use it as a measuring tool against our brothers and sisters
  • The coffee place experience
    • John 4:1-42 – the Samaritan woman at the well
  • John 4:29-30 (Nkjv) And at this point His disciples came, and they marveled that He talked with a woman; yet no one said, “What do You seek?” or, “Why are You talking with her?”

28The woman then left her waterpot, went her way into the city, and said to the men, 29 “Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?” 30 Then they went out of the city and came to Him.

  • I was that woman at one point in my life
  • How much more grace should we give to those who are seeking to know God
  • There is much deception that we allow
  • Romans 15: Let each of us please his neighbor for his good….
    • (Why?) leading to edification
    • So, they can see Christ in us
    • So, we can build the Church of God
    • Love your neighbor as yourself -same grace we received, they get to experience it
  • Romans 14:1 (Ampc) As for the man who is a weak believer, welcome him [into your fellowship], but not to criticize his opinions or pass judgment on his scruples or perplex him with discussions.
  • I Corinthians 10:31-33 (Ampc) So then, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you may do, do all for the honor and glory of God.  Do not let yourselves be [hindrances by giving] an offense to the Jews or to the Greeks or to the church of God [[a]do not lead others into sin by your mode of life]; Just as I myself strive to please [to accommodate myself to the opinions, desires, and interests of others, adapting myself to] all men in everything I do, not aiming at or considering my own profit and advantage, but that of the many in order that they may be saved.
    • Do for others so they might be saved
  • Copy and paste and repeat!
  • (Vs 3) For even Christ did not please Himself, but as it is written, “The reproaches (the expression of disapproval or disappointment) of those who reproached You fell on Me.
  • Jesus took the stand -showed us by example
    • We too can do it by the Help of the Holy Spirit
    • Luke 4:1(Nkjv) – Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit [a]into the wilderness, being [b]tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days, He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry.

  • Romans 15:5 -.  Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be like-minded toward one another
  • Patience and comfort: These are two very important words when used together, yet very difficult to master
  • This is only possible through Christ – to be content where you are as long Christ is with you
  • Patience is something we need to pray for:
    • People say, I don’t want to pray for patience
    • God will cause you to have patience – Our Christian walk is all about Patience
  • We love it when God is patient with us, but wait till a demand is called for our patience towards each other…then all bets are off
  • We are called to be patient with God and with others
  • Romans 15:2( Ampc) Let each one of us make a practice to please his neighbor for his good and for his true welfare, to edify him
    • A practice – A continuous thing
    • Because this is what the Lord requires
    • It edifies the church, and it pleases you and I (Peace in the body)
  • Galatians 6:1(Nkjv) – Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of a gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.
  • Revisit the text
  • (Vs.4) What was written earlier (Old Testament) for our instructions

  • May God who gives us endurance
    • He is the only on that can – The fullness of the Holy Spirit

  • Galatians 6:2 (Ampc)  – Bear (endure, carry) one another’s burdens and [a]troublesome moral faults, and in this way fulfill and observe perfectly the law of Christ (the Messiah) and complete [b]what is lacking [in your obedience to it].
  • Paul didn’t say – Lets just put up with the weak, that’s just how they are
  • Let us not leave them in the same state, but lift each other and build them up
    • Someone did it for you as well
    • Actively and with sympathy assist them
  • Leviticus 19:18 (Nkjv)– You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord
    • This right here, as yourself
  • 1 Roman 12:17-19 (Nkjv) – Repay no one evil for evil. Have[a] regard for good things in the sight of all men. 18 If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. 19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.
  • The zeal for Gods house ….Psalms 69:9 – Because zeal for Your house has eaten me up, And the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me.

  • What does it take to be a winner?
    • Taking a true examination test
    • Acting on this truth and knowing that you can’t do it on your own strength
