A LITTLE FOOLISHNESS CAN COUNTERACT the effects of great wisdom. The Teacher says, “Get wisdom! And with all your getting of wisdom, get understanding!” The Bible is full of words of wisdom and continually admonishes us to “Get wisdom”. Wisdom is found in a daily seeking of the Lord; seeking Him through His Word, His presence, His holiness, the fellowship of the saints. Wisdom is in the fear of the Lord and constantly choosing righteousness over evil. There’s wisdom found in the counseled of the wise, walk with wise men and you will be wiser. BUT here’s where things go wrong, you can make just one foolish mistake and every wise decision you’ve made is erased.
“DEAD FLIES cause the ointment of the perfumer to putrefy [and] send forth a vile odor; so does a little folly outweigh wisdom and honor.” Ecclesiastes 10:1
Remember that Jesus said, “A little leaven, leavens the whole lump”? One act of foolishness can counteract a lifetime of wise choices, because foolishness is sin. One act of foolishness can destroy relationships. A little folly will get you fired. One act of foolishness erodes other’s trust in you. One foolish mistake can leave a lifetime of regret. Folly overtakes wisdom. Lies, gossip and slander destroy friends who trusted in you, and often you will never get that trust back. Adultery destroys families that can often never be put back together. Drunkenness, jealousy, or a coveting heart has the ability to utterly devastate a home that was once at peace. Steal just once from someone who trusts you and you may never recover that trust. What will your folly cost you?
One can always be forgiven if he seeks repentance, but a little folly destroys the beautiful fragrance of the perfume. Forgiveness does not always equal reconciliation and it most definitely does not equal trust. Your folly could cost you everything. Instead of always minimizing the consequences, you need to maximize the consequences, “what’s the worst that can happen if I do or say this?” A fruit of the Spirit is self-control. Try disciplining and crucifying your flesh and you will walk in the Spirit. Hold your tongue. It will save you a world of hurt. Even a foolish man is counted wise if he holds his tongue.
