- Worship through the Battle. 2 Sam 22 – worship battle
- Your life is hard- You are going to go through struggles- If you wrote a psalm after going through it what would it say? I trusted myself, I was scared, I was lonely, God did nothing, I lived for myself broke busted and disgusted.
- This psalm is a summation of the struggles of David- He’s recollecting the wins and losses to the point of his life through the lens of song. He’s singing a song as he’s coming through the battle.
- Its not exceptional- This is common in the Bible- Song of Israel by the sea (Exodus 15:1-18) Song of Moses (Deuteronomy 32:1-43) Song of Deborah (Judges 5) Song of Habakkuk (Habakkuk 3:1-19)Song of Hannah (1 Samuel 2:1-10) Song of David (2 Samuel 22; Psalm 18)
- 2 Sam 22 is very close to Psalm 18 and speaks to how David got through his struggles and wars.
- It spoke volumes to the people at the time-and speaks to us today as well.
- There’s a lot to cover- but what I’d like to do is just cover the main themes of the psalm, because the overall themes are the framework by which we understand the entirety of the Psalm. Lets walk through it together and see what David shares with us through this Psalm
- I praise God He keeps me safe. Read V 1-3 – worship battle
- He is my fortress, deliverer, strength, I trust him, he’s my shield, my refuge, savior from violence,
- God protected David in many ways- A friend in Jonathan who gave him wise counsel, A wife Michal, a wife who protected him, Samuel who was a great mentor and the Spirit of God
- God kept him safe from Saul, his enemies, distracted people and stopped armies.
- Psalm 17:8 Keep me as the apple of Your eye; Hide me under the shadow of Your wings,
When you’re the apple of God’s eye he is going to watch over you. He will protect you - This idea of God’s protection is all throughout the OT because God had big plans for Israel to go and conquer nations and even when they had problems- God promised they would endure
- Isaiah 43:2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, Nor shall the flame scorch you.
- Nahum 1:7 The Lord is good, A stronghold in the day of trouble; And He knows those who trust in Him.
- Proverbs 18:10 The name of the Lord is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are safe.
- What does it mean to you
- Do you see how God has kept you safe? How he has watched out for you- looked over you?
- Do you see the hand of God upon your life? You are still here. He has looked over you
- Deployed- Psalm 91:7 A thousand may fall at your side, And ten thousand at your right hand;
- But it shall not come near you. GOD DID THAT FOR ME- HE PROTECTED ME
- And If you don’t feel safe- you need to appropriate the scriptures to get some FAITH-
- God protects his own- he watched out for David and he will watch out for YOU.
- Deuteronomy 31:6 Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.”
- 2 Timothy 4:18 And the Lord will deliver me from every evil work and preserve me for His heavenly kingdom. To Him be glory forever and ever. Amen!
- Psalm 121:7-8
- I was in trouble, I called on him, He rescues me, he hears me, and saved me READ V 4-20 – worship battle
- When I call I’m saved from my enemies- surrounded by death Floods of ungodliness Sorrows of Hell and snares of death HE HEARD ME- why? Because those things make him angry! And he did something about it and delivered me!
- When we see sin and it upsets us, it upsets God even more. He hates wickedness Psalm 11:5 The Lord tests the righteous, But the wicked and the one who loves violence His soul hates.
- When we are upset about ungodly behavior, God is even more upset
- David Called out to God when he was in distress and God heard him. God saved him from it.
- Psalm 143:9 Deliver me, O Lord, from my enemies; [a]In You I take shelter.
- Proverbs 11:8 The righteous is delivered from trouble, And it comes to the wicked instead.
- Here might be the greatest difference between you and David- He called out to God and was able to see him work on his behalf- he was able to see God move.
- Daniel 6:27 7 He delivers and rescues, And He works signs and wonders In heaven and on earth, Who has delivered Daniel from the [a]power of the lions.
- What does it mean to you
- Are you asking God to rescue and save you when you are in trouble or are you trying to fix it yourself? Is this your testimony, or is it I did it myself? Do you cry out to God in prayer?
- 1 John 5:14 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.
- Try it! See what God does- See how he moves and how he shows up in HIS TIME- HE WILL
- 2 Corinthians 1:10 0 who delivered us from so great a death, and [a]does deliver us; in whom we trust that He will still deliver us,
- Here’s how I get it- God has saved me, protected me thus far- he wont stop now.
- God saved me because of my righteousness READ 21-29 – worship battle
- Yes, our “righteousness is as filthy rags” but that’s one side of the coin- we talk so much about being nothing, we forget how much we actually are. David said he was the Apple of God’s eye
- Living right produces good things in our life. David sings about it and its true- live right and God takes care of you- Being a Christian is the greatest thing in the world
- Now- I don’t talk about this a lot- because I don’t want people coming to God because they want blessings- Salvation begins with realizing your sin. But there are blessing
- Deuteronomy 9:4-6 READ- You are not that good- God is good..
- 2 Samuel 22:21 “The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness; According to the cleanness of my hands He has recompensed me.
- And that’s true- David lived right before God- Not perfect- but right and God blessed him.
- 1 Ki 8:32b says justifying the righteous by giving him according to his righteousness.
- Psalm 7:8 says Judge me, O Lord, according to my righteousness, And according to my integrity
- God watches what we do and how we live- living righteous is the way to God
- What does it mean to you
- Are you living righteously? Righteous living isn’t unbiblical and its not wrong to preach to live righteously. The Bible declares that righteous living is what we should be doing
- And so we must examine ourselves and say- how am I living?
- 1 Corinthians 15:58 8 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord. Job 17:9 Yet the righteous will hold to his way, And he who has clean hands will be stronger and stronger. 2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. Isaiah 3:10 “Say to the righteous that it shall be well with them, For they shall eat the fruit of their doings. Matthew 16:27 For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works. Revelation 22:12 “And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work.
- 1 Corinthians 4:5 Romans 2:7-8 Ephesians 6:8
- against the scriptures- not self examining. Not doing acts of charity and service living for self
- Like weight loss- Show alone- Everyone can lose weight- but people don’t pay attention
- God saved me and gave me strength to fight and to prevail over my enemies. READ 30-46 – worship battle
- People say “God helps those who help themselves” and that’s not in the scripture. But its clear here- that David was able to do what he did because of the Lord- but David did it. God did it through David- David didn’t step back and watch- David went to war and God moved through him
- Exodus 15:2 says The Lord is my strength and song, And He has become my salvation; Deuteronomy 31:6 Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.” Habakkuk 3:19 The Lord God is my strength; He will make my feet like deer’s feet, And He will make me walk on my high hills.Isaiah 40:29 He gives power to the weak, And to those who have no might He increases strength.
- When david fought on his own he lost- when he fought leaning on God- he won
- It’s a life lesson for us- win your battles by leaning on God. Not on your own strength
- What does it mean to you? You can’t see God move if you don’t move
- There’s a delicate balance between waiting on God and God waiting on you but you need to walk through the nuance of it.
- Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through [a]Christ who strengthens me.
- Paul could not have said that if he hadn’t walked through something he had to lean on God
- Right now is a great time for us to lean on God- Great time to learn to see his strength in us
- Appropriating scriptures, walking out our faith, praying and reading, trusting God.
Colossians 1:11 strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; Ephesians 3:16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, - God does not add to our strength- His strength overcomes our weakness- He doesn’t use our strength he becomes our strength
- 2 Corinthians 12:7-10 2 Timothy 1:7
- Praise God! READ 47-50 – worship battle
- Good ol’ praise- Just a bunch of praise- why? Because he is worthy of praise.
- In my opinion, David is the best worshipper. Who wrote more songs?
- And WORSHIP is central to who we are as people of faith- Not singing- WORSHIP
- This is what the world doesn’t understand- You can just sing a song- but WORSHIP is different-
- Concert- Seeing a girl who didn’t believe the song she was singing..
- FIRST SONG of MOSES Exodus 15:2 The Lord is my strength and song, And He has become my salvation; He is my God, and I will praise Him; My father’s God, and I will exalt Him.
- We are a musical worshipping people.
- Deuteronomy 10:21 He is your praise, and He is your God, who has done for you these great and awesome things which your eyes have seen
- What does it mean to you?
- Praise breaks the yoke of bondage- but praise is due to God based on what he has done
- Ja5:13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms.
- Hebrews 13:15 Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, [a]giving thanks to His name.
- This is why I will never stop worshipping. I will never stop praising. No government- no entity can restrict my praise to my God- I WILL Worship him. I WILL Raise his name in the ASSEMBLY
- Ephesians 5:19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,
- But not just in the assembly- In my car, in my house, in my workouts, in my life. WORSHIP
- Psalm 150:1 Praise the Lord! Praise God in His sanctuary; Praise Him in His mighty firmament
