Exodus 3:16-22
- We’re walking through the story of Moses. The Burning Bush, God speaking, Moses thinking that he doesn’t have what it takes.
- The Big themes of Exodus is that God does speak, he does move, he is working towards a plan.
- Now, I’ve said this before- We are not Israel wandering in the wilderness, but God still speaks to individuals to accomplish tasks that bring forth God’s eternal plan and move the Kingdom forward. God will speak, but it works in concert with his sovereign hand.
- From the Big to small. God called Billy Graham to do his crusades. He called William Booth to start the Salvation Army. Aimee Semple McPherson to start the Foursquare.
- God calls people. Start a ministry in a Church. Start an outreach. Start small group. Gather. Lead.
- But how? What’s the process and how can you get involved in the process of growing the Kingdom? What do you do when you hear from God and what do you do with it?
- Because here’s what I know- Those who are available- God always uses. If you listen and respond. If you don’t want to be used by God, tell him.
1: God Calls people (Exodus 3:16)
- 16 Go and gather the elders of Israel together, and say to them, ‘The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, appeared to me, saying, “I have surely visited you and seen what is done to you in Egypt;
- God had called Moses as the leader- God always calls the leader first. He gives them the vision and tells them what to do. When God moves on this earth, he moves through people’s obedience. (Young people- better be listening- 20s are where its at- Be seeking God or lost)
- What is interesting in this story, is that Moses doesn’t act unilaterally, but submits himself to those who were the elders of Israel. To their wisdom and experience. He didn’t just go out and start leading. He went to God first, talked to God and then went to men
- Same as paul- Galatians 1:15-16 – “But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb and called me through His grace, to reveal His Son in me, that I might preach Him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately confer with flesh and blood.”
- His first step after submitting to God was to submit to the leadership around him.
- This is what God does. God calls individuals to specific tasks and missions.
- Isaiah 6:8 – “Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?’ Then I said, ‘Here am I! Send me.'”
- Matthew 4:19 – “Then He said to them, ‘Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.'”
- Acts 9:15 But the Lord said to him, ‘Go, for he is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel.
- He 5:4 And no man takes this honor to himself, but he who is called by God, just as Aaron was.”
- What is important here- and we covered this a few weeks ago- is that God calls. He speaks.
- If you are willing to listen, God will speak to you what you are to do and how you are to do it
- What it means to you
- Are you listening to what God may be calling you to do? Yes, you’re not Moses and you’re not leading anyone outside the wilderness but maybe there’s a gifting and calling in you
- If you will listen. You will know. It will be specific and you will know its from him.
- It may not even be a public organized entity. Roger the Poet- He’s obedient! (LIVE ready y)
- But once you’ve heard from God, you should bring it before known leaders in the Church.
- In this instance- the elders didn’t push back- but he still submitted.
- Paul Submitted to Peter for 2 weeks before going out.
- Commission always follows calling. In the NT its by the laying on hands.
- Acts 13:2-3 – “As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’ Then, having fasted and prayed, and laid hands on them, they sent them away.”
- God’s calling is intentional and purposeful. Jer 1:5 – God knew Jeremiah before he was formed in the womb. Isaiah 6:8 – Isaiah responds to God’s call to be a prophet. Mt 4:19 – Jesus calls His disciples to follow Him. Acts 9:3-6 – Saul’s encounter with Jesus on the road to Damascus. John on the isle of Patmos.
- Another part of this is that if you’re not the one that God called to work, submit to the person that God did call, and therefore submit to God. God does not call people to overtake another
- Faith and Victory is my work. But there are sub works. Things people do that God called them to. I don’t get in the weeds on it. Meeple, Spot, live ready, Youth, Kids, Worship, Q, Young Wives, Women, Men etc. I just come alongside what God is doing. I know my role. I support.
- Don’t be the unspiritual undisciplined person who wont listen that wants to hijack someone elses vision. Hear from God and obey, or submit to those who are walking it out. God needs those too.
2: God Gives a Vision (Exodus 3:17-18)
- Read V 17-18
- Brought up to a specific place, They will listen to Moses, Bring the elders, and then say THIS
God doesn’t just give a somewhat Vision- But a specific tangible vision of what to do. - This is why when people say “God told me to just go and wander” I’m like- did he?
- Because in the Bible it was always specific and it was understood what was supposed to happen
- Proverbs 29:18 – Where there is no vision, the people perish.
- Habakkuk 2:2-3 – Write down the vision and wait for its fulfillment.
- God has a vision. He has a plan. The end plan is very clear. What we DO while we’re here, not as clear. We must live spirit led submitted biblical lives discerning what God wants from us.
- Bible doesn’t talk about helping drug addicted, sex trafficked, homeless, feeding programs, veterans, finances, etc. Those are all Good, not bad things at all. Very helpful.
- The only mission and organization that is clearly articulated is a Church. That’s it. That’s the tip of the spear. All other missions should be connect and push people towards the Church.
- If they don’t, then they are not following the Bible. Start as para-church end up parasite.
- So if you’re doing something other than church, you got to hear from God CLEARY.
- Be a firefighter. A teacher. A business owner. A nurse. A pipe fitter. A electrician. Software guy.
- God will call you there to do something and to be something, if only to shine the light of Gospel and lead people to Christ and his church. To financially support the work and share Gospel at work. God needs financial supporters and Kingdom expanders in the workplace- not just church
- What does it mean to you
- God speaks to YOU. Not to someone else. Maybe confirmed in someone else, but to YOU
- God doesn’t give you a vision to have someone else fulfill. He doesn’t call you to tell me
- God doesn’t give you vague. Its specific. He doesn’t call you to something unscriptural.
- God is not calling you to the bar or the strip club. He’s not calling you to leave his church.
- Jer 23:6 Thus says the Lord of hosts: “Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you. They make you worthless; They speak a vision of their own heart, Not from the mouth of the Lord.
- having a clear vision from God provides direction and motivation. It keeps you from being pulled in different directions. Many years people wanted this church and I to have a different focus. You need to be about “THIS”. No. I’m supposed to be about this and THAT supports THIS
- NOTICE- It always lines up with his WORD. It is not AGAINST the SCRIPTURES>
- NOTICE- Always involves a sacrifice. There must be a spiritual component. Honoring GOD
- V18 let us go three days’ journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the Lord our God.
- This God-honoring vision will be consecrated to the King of Kings- Its not for YOU its for HIM
- People who don’t do it for him give up because they did it for the wrong reasons. You have to consecrate it to HIM for HIM to be able to bless it.
- Jonah had to go to Ninevah, God spoke to the prophets of the Old Testament. He spoke to Samuel, Moses, Joshua, David, Paul, Peter, John. Specific Visions!
- Proverbs 3:5-6 – 5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.
- God is going to give you a clear vision. It may scare you. You will feel like you aren’t qualified.
3: God Does What We Can’t (Exodus 3:19-20)
- 19 But I am sure that the king of Egypt will not let you go, no, not even by a mighty hand. 20 So I will stretch out My hand and strike Egypt with all My wonders which I will do in its midst; and after that he will let you go.
- See, God calls Moses, Gives him a vision, and its clear that Moses doesn’t have what it takes
- Moses knows he doesn’t have what it takes, God knows he doesn’t have what it takes, so God must get involved in the process. God always comes in to finish what he started for HIS glory!
- This is a common theme in Scripture. Our inability and God’s supernatural intervention
- This is the story of our Faith! We can’t save ourselves- We can’t be good enough!
- God knew that- that’s why he had to send Jesus for us! To save us when we couldn’t save ourselves! And we cant do what he asks us to do without HIM. The task is far too large!
- God’s intervention surpasses human limitations. There is only so much that we are capable of
- Jeremiah 32:17 – Nothing is too hard for God.
- Matthew 19:26 – With God, all things are possible.
- Ephesians 3:20 – God can do exceedingly abundantly more than we can ask or imagine!
- Do you know what the barrier is to this? Unbelief!
- Now, some will argue and say- Does God not move on my behalf because I don’t have enough Faith? No- You don’t move because you don’t have enough Faith. And if you have that Faith, you can be put in a position for God to intervene and move supernaturally on your behalf!
- Moses had to Go to pharoah, and however ineffective he may have been- he still went
- Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
- Be like the father in Mark 9:24 Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!”
- Just tell God that you struggle with belief, and then step out in Faith and watch him MOVE>
- What does it mean to you
- You have limitations! There is only so much that you can do! Praise God! HE gets GLORY
- You can do the inputs, but only God can do the supernatural and make it happen!
- We pray, we ask, we believe, we act, we move, but then GOD is the one who moves!
- Moses didn’t have what it took- he was slow to speech, he was old. He needed GOD!
- Real talk- You may not be starting a ministry or a business, but you may be in a place in your life where you just need God to MOVE. Marriage, Kids, Business, Ministry, Relationships, Finances, Job etc. You can only do SO MUCH. You need to do YOUR part, but then God will do HIS PART
- Jeremiah 32:17 ‘Ah, Lord God! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for You.
- Job 42:2 “I know that You can do everything, And that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You. Here’s what happens-
4: God Gives the Increase (Exodus 3:22)
- 22 But every woman shall ask of her neighbor, namely, of her who dwells near her house, articles of silver, articles of gold, and clothing; and you shall put them on your sons and on your daughters. So you shall plunder the Egyptians.”
- Now this is kind of interesting- but it was a common custom to give someone a trinket as they were leaving for a journey (seemingly to return) and God tells the Hebrews, ask for a trinket, they’ll give it to you, but you’re not coming back, so you’ll leave with a blessing for your work
- God supernaturally gave them valuables to recompense them for their toil and labor.
- Wasn’t enough probably, but it was something. It was more than they expected.
- God fulfills His promises and brings about increase.
- Ge 12:2 I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing.
- You can’t be great without provision. You cant help others if you’re broke. God does it!
- God speaks to a person, gives a vision, does what the person cant and then HE increases it!
- Only the LORD can do it! You can’t make it grow, you cant make them come, you get them to buy, you cant get them to sell, you cant get them to hire you, you don’t control it!
- 1 Corinthians 3:6-7 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. 7 So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase.
- trust in God’s provision and blessings!
- 2 Cor 9:10 Now may He who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness,
- But its only God! If it was anyone else- he wouldn’t get the Glory- it has to be HIM!
- Psalm 67:6 – God blesses us, and the earth yields its increase.
- Philippians 4:19 – God shall supply all our needs according to His riches.
- So lets end with this- God will call you, Give you a vision, you wont have what it takes, God will show up and do the miraculous and bring it to fruition.
- Pray and listen. Trust and obey. See what God can do with you. Trust. Act. Wait. See.
