- You Hunt My life to Take IT 1 sam 24
- This is very interesting story- David is hiding in a cave, Saul and his men are trying to find him and kill him. Saul, by chance, ends up going into a cave to relieve himself and David is in there! David ends up cutting the edge of Sauls robe, Saul leaves, and David runs out to tell him- Hey! I could have killed you but I didn’t! Saul repents- he has sorrow and tells David that he will become king and be blessed and appears to stop pursuing David.
- This is a picture of the Gospel. Saul is a sinner deserving death, David has the capacity and opportunity to kill him, but David gives him grace even tho he doesn’t deserve it and Saul is spared.
- Saul deserved Death
- So Saul and 3000 men are on the hunt for David- and Saul Goes into a cave to relieve himself-
- V 3 So he came to the sheepfolds by the road, where there was a cave; and Saul went in to attend to his needs.-
- David cuts a corner of his robe while he’s doing this and friends tell him to Kill the King
- In that Moment- David could have easily justified Killing Saul to protect himself and his men
- No one would have said anything if David would have Killed- His own men are encouraging him!
- Saul deserved death for his actions. He was wicked. He was evil. He was attempting murder.
- Is 3:11Woe to the wicked It shall be ill with him, For the reward of his hands shall be given him.

- Saul would be getting his just reward– a murderous plot rewarded with death- you get death
- Psalm 34:21 Evil shall slay the wicked, And those who hate the righteous shall be condemned.
- This is justice- You get what you deserve- You try evil- you get evil. You kill you die.
- This is that moment in the movie where the bad guy dies and everyone likes it- YEEESSS
- Here’s where the Gospel comes in tho- We are all Sauls- We deserve death
- 17 Then he said to David: “You are more righteous than I; for you have rewarded me with good, whereas I have rewarded you with evil.
- We look at Saul and say “Kill that guy” and “he deserves it” and then Jesus says
- Matthew 5: 21-22 READ- None of us are better than Saul- Not one of us!
- Brown bear- I made a mistake- Yelling at them to their face “I MADE A MISTAKE” (why c drives)
- Rom6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
- Ephesians 2:3 READ
- Titus 3:3 For we ourselves were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another.
- You are saul- I am Saul. We are Saul. We desire destruction for others in our mind.
- But what Happens to Saul?

- David gave him Grace- because of who HE was- not because of who SAUL was
- READ 8-13
- 13 As the proverb of the ancients says, ‘Wickedness proceeds from the wicked.’ But my hand shall not be against you
- Ezekiel 18:20 The soul who sins shall die……the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.
- David has is described as “a Man after God’s own heart” and right here he’s showing HIS heart and the heart of God-
- Lam 3:22 Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not.
- David could say- Psalm 86:15 But You, O Lord, are a God full of compassion, and gracious, Longsuffering and abundant in mercy and truth.
- People talk about the God of the NT v the God of OT- But God has not changed- God is a God of mercy in the OT and a God of Mercy in the NT. He’s a God of Wrath in the OT and the NT
- Micah 7:18-19 READ He does not retain His anger forever, Because He delights in mercy.
- Ezra 9:13-15 13 READ have punished us less than our iniquities deserve
- Saul was deserving of Death, but David didn’t kill him- not because Saul was deserving of mercy- but because David’s nature was one of mercy- Such as it is with the Heart of God-

- David said- Psalm 103:10 He has not dealt with us according to our sins, Nor punished us according to our iniquities.
- David is going to understand the mercy of God later in this story when he sends a man into battle to be killed so David can sleep with his wife and God spares David-
- The image of David as a Christ Figure cannot be understated here- He chooses mercy-
- 18 And you have shown this day how you have dealt well with me; for when the Lord delivered me into your hand, you did not kill me. 19 For if a man finds his enemy, will he let him get away safely? Therefore may the Lord reward you with good for what you have done to me this day. 20 And now I know indeed that you shall surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in your hand.
- This is the heart and nature of God- He loves to show mercy! He is a merciful God!
- Psalm 106:45 And for their sake He remembered His covenant, And relented according to the multitude of His mercies
- We need God’s mercy!
- We were all Sauls- we all deserved Death- but God, who is rich in mercy- forgave us in Christ!
- Romans 9: 22 What if God, wanting to show His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, 23 and that He might make known the riches of His glory on the vessels of mercy, which He had prepared beforehand for glory,
- This is the crux of the Gospel- we were objects of God’s wrath- He was upset with us because of our sin and how we were living, but because he loves us and desires to show us mercy- he sent Jesus to forgive us of our sins.
- Ephesians 2:5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
- We were DEAD- Unable to save ourselves- and God sends Jesus to SAVE US from our Sins
- And this saving- not just saved us from the penalty of sin it saved us from the effects and the power of sin over lives- so we can live lift unto God THROUGH Jesus

- Romans 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.
- Eph 2:1 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins,
- Romans 5:10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.
- And NOW Through Jesus- we are made WHOLE- Our sins forgiven and relationship restored!
- Col 1: 21 And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled 22 in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight—
Then how should we live?
- Don’t live in Sin
- The freedom FROM Sin isn’t freedom TO sin. Not at all. Will one sin keep you out of heaven? No
- But shouldn’t we be working towards holiness? Shouldn’t we honor God with our lives?
- 2 peter 3: 14 Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless;
- The scripture is very clear- when you have been forgiven from Sin- you should stop sinning.
- Ro 6:15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not!
- Saul turned away from pursuing David because of his mercy- you should turn from Sin bc of JC
- Give God Everything
- At that moment Saul should have abdicated the throne right there- David- you had every opportunity to kill me and I deserved it- You can be my King- You can lead ME- I’m BROKEN
- Romans 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.
- We deserved death- we should be destroyed- but God LOVED US and SAVED US-
- You can have it all now Jesus- You can have everything I have- I shouldn’t even be alive!
- Luke 9: 23 Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me

- Love Everyone
- The natural by-product of being saved, and loved is loving others- Knowing- I was loved-
- Gal 5:14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 1John 4:8 He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
- It doesn’t matter who it is or what they’ve done. Love them. Why? God loved YOU when you were a despicable dung eater- and now- you should love others- Even the unlovable!
- Saul wasn’t lovable. He wasn’t worth Davids love- David loved him because of GOD not HIM
- Forgive Everyone
- Forgiveness is different than restoration- but you give it over to God in your heart
- Colossians 3:13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.
- You can not be in relationship with someone- I don’t think Saul and David were buddies-forgve!
- Matthew 6:14-15 “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
- Don’t fear Judgment
- 1 John 4:17 Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world.
- If you’re in Christ- You can rest in your salvation if youre in Christ !you’re secure
- Lead others To Christ
