You are the Fruit

  • Matthew 21:33-46 You are the Fruit
  • Jesus, again is telling a parable to the pharisees to illustrate a point- He is messiah, receive him
  • Landowner plants a vineyard, puts people in charge of it. The vinedressers. The owner sends his servants to go and get the owners fruit. The vinedressers beat one, killed one, stoned another. So he sends more of his people, they do the same to them. So then he sends his son, but they kill him hoping to take the vineyard for themselves. Jesus asks? What is the owner going to do to those he put in charge? They reply, destroy them, and put someone else in charge. Jesus says- and quotes Psalm 118:22 as a fulfillment of the prophecy- That he is the stone and they are rejecting him.
  • So he tells them- very plainly- The kingdom is going to be taken from you and given to someone who is going to do something with it. They understand what he’s saying- so they plot to kill him.
  • Let me give it to you plainly- The vinedressers are Israel-The fruit is the people of God. The servants are the prophets of the OT- The Son is Jesus. God had given the blessing of the kingdom to Israel, and now the fruit of the kingdom (the people) is coming forth- the arrival of Messiah- and they are rejecting him- So God is going to give that blessing of followers to someone who Is going to receive it.
  • Here’s what Jesus describes to these pharisees-
  • God is the landowner- he plants what he wants, where he wants, when he wants-He even provides protection for it- the Hedge of the Law -He provides a winepress to produce wine from the fruit
  • They are put in charge and charged with producing- Doing something with what they have been given- in this case fruit- And that can mean many things- The fruit of proclaiming messiah The fruit is the people and Jesus has come to harvest his flock- The pharisees want to keep the people for themselves, so they reject Christ and keep them for themselves.
  • What does it mean to you
  1. You are the fruit -Its All for God
  • The fruit is the central theme to this parable- not the vinedressers or the servants- The issue of a vineyard is always the fruit of the vine. Its not the workers, its not the vine. Its not the process- it’s the fruit- No fruit no profit. No profit no purpose. The outcome of a vineyard is its most valuable commodity
  • The issue is- to whom does the fruit belong to- God. He’s the owner- This parable even says that he ‘leased it’ to them. They didn’t even own it- The fruit never belonged to them.
  • Jeremiah 32:38 They shall be My people, and I will be their God;
  • Heb 8:10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
  • Ezekiel 37:27 My tabernacle also shall be with them; indeed I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
  • Zechariah 13:9They will call on My name, And I will answer them. I will say, ‘This is My people’; And each one will say, ‘The Lord is my God.’ ”
  • This idea of ownership of God of his people is all throughout scripture- God created- God owns-
  • God made you- God owns you- What he does with you and for you and in you is his pleasure
  • The cup does not say to the maker “what are you making” because the maker owns it
  • Buying our house in Covington- Moved in for 2 weeks waiting for it to close- Day I got keys I came home and kicked down the fence. It was mine. I could do whatever I wanted.
  • That’s the privilege of ownership- you get to do what you want with what is yours.
  • You can make whatever demand you want on it with no explanations. (his vineyard)
  • Job 12:10 In whose hand is the life of every living thing, And the breath of all mankind?
  • 1 Corinthians 4:7 For who makes you differ from another? And what do you have that you did not receive? Now if you did indeed receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?
  • This is why the ideas of Christianity that are argued with about people within the faith are so surprising to me. Its because people come to Jesus for what they can get- not for what he wants- they resist it.
  • And the reason I constantly repeat this is that the interpersonal problems that I quarterback and the divisions that I squash and the pushback I always receive stems from this truth- What you want is not what HE wants
  • “who are you to tell me what to do and what to believe” (This is my vineyard- I am the owner)
  • Well, you’re not getting the point from your Bible reading, so I have to tell you repeatedly
  • Christians constantly having to be convinced of the basics of the faith because the hold on so desperately to their individualism. Their time, money, thoughts, actions, etc. They kill the prophets and then kill the son
  • Willful disobedience to God and his demands- when he has every right to everything.
  • Military- promotion- Pulled aside- “don’t ever ask your troops to do something- tell them” asking gives them the impression that they have an option in the matter. (his fruit)
  • Same thing with God- we don’t have an option. Its obedience or disobedience. And its against the culture
  • Isaiah 43:21 This people I have formed for Myself; They shall declare My praise
  • Titus 2:14 who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.
  • Deut 26:19 and that He will set you high above all nations which He has made, in praise, in name, and in honor, and that you may be a holy people to the Lord your God, just as He has spoken.”
  • This is a very hard concept for people to grasp- “there is nothing you have that didn’t come through my hands” momma ‘I brought you into this world, I can take you out” . All of you belongs to all of HIM
  1. You are the fruit Take care of what you’ve been given
  • Part of the theme of this parable is the idea that these vinedressers were given the chance to receive the message of the servants but they refused- they rejected the messengers who were trying to show them the way- They stoned and beat up those guys as well!
  • So what did the landowner do?
  • He took what they had (the vineyard and the fruit) and gave it to the gentiles-
  • This is the operative verse- Matthew 21:43 “Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a nation bearing the fruits of it.
  • You reject him? You don’t do what he says? He’ll take what you have and give it to someone else!
  • Meaning– The nation of Israel represented by the pharisees will not receive the fruit of the followers of God- but the gentiles will because they are going to receive Christ as savior.
  • This is the principle- If God gives you something, and you don’t receive it, or you ruin it, or you walk away from it, He is going to give it to someone who is going to do something with it.
  • They wanted the influence- they wanted the followers but WITHOUT accepting JESUS
  • SO no way- Jesus is the way- if you are going to reject him- you’re not getting any followers
  • .2 percent of the planet is jewish- 14.8 mil. 2.2b Christians. 25% (80% claim in US 51% seldom or never attend church- interesting- I digress) The POINT is that there IS more followers of JESUS even TODAY
  • The Fruit went to JESUS not the pharisees! Took what THEY Had and gave it to JESUS.
  • What does it mean to you?
  • It’s possible to lose what you have If you don’t do what God tells you to do with it.
  • The pharisees were supposed to recognize Jesus as savior and king- and then the nation of Israel would have been blessed with all the fruit of the people of God.
  • This is Romans 1:16- Salvation is first for the jew and then the Greek. They had first dibs and they missed it.
  • This is echoed in 2 John 8 Look to yourselves, that we do not lose those things we worked for, but that we may receive a full reward.
  • 2 John says you can lose what you worked for- Its possible. 2 John gives us the key to not lose what we have worked for- 9 Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son.
  • Abiding in Jesus and his doctrine- Grace, forgiveness, mercy, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, self control. All of it- Abiding in that.
  • Jesus echos this in Matthew 25 and the parable to the talents-
  • Matthew 25:28 So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents. 29 ‘For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away
  • Meaning- God is just to reward who he sees fit- if you don’t use what God has given you to bring him Glory- he may take it from you and give it to someone else- Someone who is going to do something with it.
  • People say- ‘that’s mean’ Is it? He fully rejected a whole race of people that he called his own and his chose people because they rejected his son. Why would you think he wouldn’t take something even less seemingly spiritually significant from your life to get you to bow down? (Churches dying- fvc growing- and its good)
  • You’re choosing to not believe the plain edicts of scripture to hold on to your own way!
  • Matthew 13:12 For whoever has, to him more will be given, and he will have abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him
  • Meaning- Those who don’t listen to Jesus are going to lose what they have to someone else.
  • Luke 8:18 Same thing. Meaning- Jesus might give what you have to someone else.
  • John 15:2 Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.
  • Meaning- If you don’t bear fruit, you aren’t going to make it- but if you do, you’ll be pruned. Here’s the principle meaning of this parable and the immediate application to you- If you reject Jesus as Lord, don’t expect to inherit the blessings of the Kingdom of God- They aren’t for you. They will be given to those who believe in Jesus and walk in his kingdom.
  • We are his church- 1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;
  • So if we don’t proclaim his praises, and bear fruit for the kingdom? What will happen to us based on the principle? He will give his kingdom to someone who will give him praise.
  • Let us not be those people- Let us not forsake that which he has given us- Let us believe and proclaim. Let us submit to the landowner as his fruit and do that which he has commanded us to do. Jesus came to redeem us from the wicked vinedresser. Let us submit to him wholly.
  1.  You are the fruit- Don’t reject Jesus
  • In this parable, God puts Israel in charge of his vineyard, sends prophets to collect the fruit, they reject them, don’t come back to God, so he sends his son (Jesus) to them and they kill him
  • This is prophetic and true at the same time- They are rejecting him and they will kill him
  • They admit 41 They said to Him, “He will destroy those wicked men miserably, and lease his vineyard to other vinedressers who will render to him the fruits in their seasons.”
  • And that’s true as well- God destroys people who reject his son.
  • John 3:36 He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”
  • This is one of the most scandalous claims of Christianity- The supremacy of Christ as the arbiter of entrance into eternal life. Its one of the main reasons people claim to reject him- ‘I’m not going to serve a God that sends people to hell’ I’ve done many a funeral and I’ve yet to do one where family members get up front and talk about their departed being in Hell.
  • They all want to believe that they are in a ‘better place’ or ‘heaven’ there’s a cultural phenomenon of belief in heaven- so when you put Jesus at the gate- it challenges
  • Acts 4:12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
  • There is no other messiah and its not my fault who it condemns- It is the claim of Jesus.
  • John 14:6 I am the way the truth and life and no man comes to the father except through me
  • So what does it mean to you
  • If you don’t believe that Jesus is who he says he is- you need to spend more time investigating the claims of Jesus as the savior of the world. You’re eternity is in the balance-
  • Hebrews 2:3 how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him,
  • How can you neglect it? The God life is the best life. Freedom from sin and power to not sin
  • Living in the grace and mercy that Christ provides with his protection and peace. LOVE IT
  • This rejection was prophesied- It was to happen-
  • Isaiah 53:3 He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
  • It was prophecy. Men would reject Jesus and send him to the Cross- he had to die
  • But NOW- Why would you reject him? Really its this- sexual immorality, drunkenness, anger, selfishness, lying, fighting, wanting your own time and money and answer to no one. SELF
  • That’s why. Do what you want when you want with no restraints.
  • You LIE to yourself and say its not true. 1 John 2:22 Who is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist who denies the Father and the Son.
  • Its true! Its been proven many times over, but people still don’t want to submit to the LORD
  • Sadly- people ALSO want to claim him as savior and STILL do all that same sinful stuff!
  • But its REJECTION Hebrews 10:26 For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,
  • When we willfully sin- we’re rejecting Jesus- we’re spitting on the cross and living for ourselves.
  • So don’t reject him. Don’t pretend that he isn’t real and that he isn’t really aware. Don’t take his grace for a spin every weekend. – Why reject it? Desire for immorality exceeds desire to be with the Lord.
  • People say that they struggle but if you’re not doing anything to break the struggle you’re not struggling you’re embracing. This week- Long time friend posting nastiness- bye. I don’t need it
  • We cannot deny Christ! We must proclaim his Goodness to all who are around
  • We must praise him for who he and what he has done!
  • We are his fruit! He came for us- The wicked vinedressers tried to keep him from us- but he came so that we might be set free!
  • So stop denying him! ‘come out’ to your family and friends.
  • This is why I challenge people to walk forward in faith for salvation- its your first declaration that you are a follower of Jesus- And it says something to an unbelieving world!
  • Matthew 10:33 But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.
